We Quantify The Qualifiers In A/NZ Esports This Week

A collection of qualifiers from around the APAC region

The highlights this week are full teams that have the koalafications — because they're Aussies securing spots in play-offs games! Dark Sided snagged a place at Blizzcon, Blank Esports snuck into the OPC play-offs, Mindfreak and Corvidae qualified for the R6S APAC Finals. Oh, and two Aussie teams duked it in the Mythic Dungeon Invitational Finals, which meant we were a sure thing for the title.

Make sure you check out the rest of the esports hub, as well! This week we'll be keeping a close eye on Blank Esports at the OPC Season 2 Finals - one of the last opportunities the team will have ahead of the Overwatch World Cup at Blizzcon! Heroes of the Storm - ANZ HGC Qualifiers

Nomia have been top dogs since before they were called Nomia, dominating the Heroes of the Storm scene in Australia via fantastic teamwork and no shortage of genuine skill. But their reign is over — last week the team from Dark Sided finally managed to beat their repeat rivals in a cracking match-up that would see a different team represent Australia for the first time in a long time. Nomia took the first game in the best of five, but Dark Sided went on to win the other three games — risky drafts from Nomia made things a little tougher than expected. Watch Dark Sided secure the momentum they needed in Game 2 with a surprise pick-off.

Overwatch - OPC Season 2 Week 6

Blank Esports has been mixing things up this season, giving new players a run as they continue to represent Aussie Overwatch in Taiwan. With the shorter season nearly out of the way, they had one last chance to secure a spot in the play-offs, needing to at least place 4th to make the cut. As it were, it would all come down the final day of the season, where they played the 5th placed team ahq esports club to decide their fate. Some clever strategies saw them make it through, as a Bastion pick on King's Row proved difficult for ahq to deal with. Watch below.

Rainbow Six Siege - Pro League S3 APAC Qualifiers

Rainbow Six Siege is extremely exciting to watch. When it's going right, it's beautifully executed plans timed to a tee, played by experts. And when things go wrong for those experts it's a wild cluster… bomb of action as each team does its best to snatch the victory. Last week the qualifiers for the APAC Finals LAN took place. Only two teams could make the cut, going on to play against teams from around Asia. Mindfreak played Athletico, and Corvidae played Taboo — Mindfreak and Corvidae won, securing their spot at the Finals and furthering their dreams of heading to Brazil for the Global Finals in November. Watch Corvidae make the best of a bad situation (and stay in the running) below.

World of Warcraft - Mythic Dungeon Invitational

This one is a little different — the Mythic Dungeon competition is a PVE (Player-versus-environment) competition featuring teams running suped-up Mythic+ World of Warcraft Dungeons as fast as they can. Deaths cost them time, so it's a careful balance of playing through the dungeons as fast as possible without playing so risky that you die. For the inaugural Mythic Dungeon Invitational the finals came down to two teams — Honestly and Free Marsy. Both were Australian teams who played their best heading in, but everyone expected Honestly to win the best of five — they'd beaten Free Marsy 2-0 in the qualifiers. It all seemed to be going that way, too, until Free Marsy managed to put together a reverse sweep and win the PVE racing competition. Either way, though, both teams proved that Australians are the best content locusts in the world.
