Arcades are mostly a thing of memory, but the love for arcade culture and cabinetry lives on. Atari and New Wave Toys joined forces to make your arcade dreams live on, only at a much smaller and more convenient size.
The Replicades are 12-inch tall, fully-functioning arcade cabinet recreations made of wood and metal. The first Replicade took arcade classic Centipede and shrunk it down to 1/6th its size, and it's all kinds of adorable.
The Replicade is available as part of a newly-launched Kickstarter campaign and features a 3.5-inch vertical, backlit LCD screen with 4:3 aspect ratio, a rechargeable battery, and a "Replicade high-performance chipset," which New Wave Toys promises gives the cabinets "smooth, lag-free gameplay."
Each cabinet is limited edition, something New Wave hopes will "encourage the collectibility" of each release. Unlike other tiny arcade cabinets in the past, the Replicade line is aimed squarely at collectors and enthusiasts, using the original licensed ROMs and high quality arcade cabinet art to recreate each game with impressive attention to detail.
The price for the Centipede cabinet is set at $90 for Kickstarter backers, and $160 once the campaign reaches its funding goal. The units are coming to "select retailers worldwide" next year.
