Supergirl's Lena Luthor Doesn't Want the Show to Introduce Lex Luthor

Luthors Don't Share Power.

Supergirl actress Katie McGrath, who plays Lena Luthor, shared with us over the phone some insights into her character that hails from one of DC’s most iconic families. It seems that being a Luthor is no easy task, especially if you’re trying to clear your name.

Spoilers for Supergirl continue below.

Lena is still dealing with the guilt she feels over the events of Season 2’s thrilling conclusion. Being one of the key people responsible for an alien invasion that resulted in your friend (Kara) losing her boyfriend (Mon-El) will undoubtedly keep you up at night.

When asked if she would like to meet her on-screen brother Lex, who we got a glimpse of last season in a flashback as a child, McGrath immediately said, “No! I don’t want any other Luthors around me. Why would I want to share power?”

According to McGrath, too many Luthors in one place is a bad thing. For McGrath, she would rather Lex stay in prison. The greatest criminal mind of our time would definitely be a threat to Lena's quest for independence. From what we’ve seen of Lena over the last year, he might do well to stay put.

“She [Lena] still gets blamed because she’s a Luthor," McGrath said. "She’s also dealing with major guilt because she hurt her best friend. I definitely have a thing for playing complex damaged women.”

There’s no denying Lena’s complexity, it’s one of the traits that makes her so fascinating to watch every Monday night on The CW. Her drive to succeed on her own merits is another favorable characteristic, which leads our heroine to purchase CatCo in last week’s Season 3 premiere.

“Buying CatCo has nothing to do with her name," McGrath said, adding, "It’s completely separate. She wants to create a name for herself. I’m going to be relying on James and Kara a lot to help me with this transition.”

This whole notion of making her own mark on National City away from her infamous family is a common thread we’ll see throughout this season. Lena will try her hardest to be better than her namesake, but that doesn’t mean she’s lost all of her Luthor habits.

Supergirl: Season 3 continues tonight with a new episode, entitled "Triggers." Make sure to catch up on our Supergirl reviews with last week's "Girl of Steel."

David Griffin still watches DuckTales in his pajamas with a cereal bowl in hand. He's also the TV Editor for IGN. Say hi on Twitter.
