After multiple leaks earlier this week, Niantic has now officially confirmed that Pokemon from Ruby and Sapphire are coming to Pokemon Go, plus a special new Pikachu.
In a blog post on Pokemon Go’s official site, Niantic announced that this year’s Halloween event will begin on October 20. To celebrate, Sableye, Banette, and “a few other Ghost-type Pokemon originally discovered in the Hoenn region” will be the first generation three Pokemon to come to the game, with more new Pokemon set to “gradually arrive” beginning in December.
The Halloween celebration will run through November 2 and also includes a special new Pikachu in a Halloween hat that will only spawn during the event. Players will also earn double candy for catching and hatching Pokemon or walking a buddy, and a Mimikyu’s Disguise hat will be available to dress up your character.
In addition to the new Pokemon, “spooky” Pokemon like Gastly, Drowzee, and Cubone will also spawn more frequently during the event. Super Incubators, which were introduced during last month’s Equinox event and hatch eggs 1.5 times more quickly, will also return to the shop.
This event follows last year’s Halloween festivities, which offered double candy and increased spawns for Ghost-type Pokemon, and led to 1.3 billion Halloween catches.
The third generation of Pokemon was introduced along with the Hoenn region in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which originally came to Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2002 and the West in 2003. Pokemon Go's staggered rollout of generation three mirrors the way Niantic released generation two, adding seven baby Pokemon (and one evolution) in December 2016, followed by the nearly complete release of generation two in early 2017.
Pokemon Go most recently added Mewtwo and the three Johto legendary beasts, but still has not added the entirety of generation one or two. Pokemon currently still missing from the game include Mew, Smeargle, Delibird, Ho-Oh, and Celebi.
