Heath Ledger was evidently so dedicated to his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight that he encouraged Christian Bale to really beat him up during filming.
The upcoming book 100 Things Batman Fans Show Know & Do Before They Die from author Joseph McCabe reveals this new behind-the-scenes story from the beloved film, as printed on The Hollywood Reporter.
McCabe talked to Bale, as well as Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, about the film in 2008 in the lead up to the movie's premiere. In speaking with Bale, the actor offered the following anecdote about filming:
"As you see in the movie, Batman starts beating the Joker and realizes that this is not your ordinary foe. Because the more I beat him the more he enjoys it. The more I’m giving him satisfaction. Heath was behaving in a very similar fashion. He was kinda egging me on. I was saying, 'You know what, I really don’t need to actually hit you. It’s going to look just as good if I don’t.' And he’s going, 'Go on. Go on. Go on….' He was slamming himself around, and there were tiled walls inside of that set which were cracked and dented from him hurling himself into them. His commitment was total."
McCabe also spoke to Heath Ledger in November 2007 while Ledger was promoting his film I'm Not There, though of course Ledger tragically died several months later.
Ledger's Joker has become one of the most iconic villains in movie history, and he won a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
In the years since the film's release and Ledger's death, more details of his commitment to the role have been revealed, including that his New York apartment was practically a shrine to the Joker.
Chris Morgan is the author of The Comic Galaxy of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and The Ash Heap of History. Wisely or not, he's also on Twitter.
