Bea Arthur's Star Wars Holiday Special Character Is Canon

No, it isn't Lumpy.

A character from the Star Wars Holiday Special is now officially part of the main Star Wars canon thanks to a new anthology of Star Wars tales.

ComicBook.com reports that From a Certain Point of View, the new book collecting dozens of Star Wars stories, contains one specific short that mentions Ackmena, a character Golden Girls actress Bea Arthur played in the Holiday Special.

Chuck Wendig's "We Don't Serve Their Kind Here" tells the story of Wuher, the barkeep from Mos Eisley Cantina, Ackmena and her wife Sorschi are mentioned by name, as Wuher hands control of the cantina over to the night-shift barkeep. The two live out in the Delkin Ridge.

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 made-for-TV movie focusing on Chewbacca's attempt to get to his home planet to celebrate Life Day with his family. It is largely disliked, including by George Lucas himself, as the first major followup fans had to the original Star Wars, ahead of the release of The Empire Strikes Back. Instead, its legacy is largely tied to Boba Fett debuting during the special.

In the special, Ackmena sings a song backed by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes.

From a Certain Point of View includes 40 different stories meant to shine a light on various background characters in the Star Wars universe. Authors include Wedig, who also wrote the novel Star Wars: Aftermath, as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Gary Whitta, Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo, and more.

The audiobook features an all-star cast, including Jon Hamm as Boba Fett and debuted alongside the hardcover and e-book versions on October 3.

Chris Morgan is the author of The Ash Heap of History and The Comic Galaxy of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Wisely or not, he's also on Twitter.
