Robin Williams Was Turned Down for a Role in Harry Potter

Gooooood morning, Azkaban.

Legendary comedian Robin Williams was turned down for the role of Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone because of a stipulation that all actors in the film must be British.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, casting director Janet Hirshenson explained that Williams had wanted the role of the half-giant Hogwarts groundskeeper.

“Robin [Williams] had called [director Chris Columbus] because he really wanted to be in the movie," she explained, "but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure."

However, Hirshenson went on to explain that Robbie Coltrane - who played Hagrid in all eight original Harry Potter films - was always series author J.K. Rowling’s first pick for the role.

Williams - who died in 2014 - was also up to play The BFG in a '90s adaptation of the film that would eventually be released last year. A fourth Aladdin film was also scrapped because of stipulations in the actor's will regarding unused voice recordings from the original film.
