Legends of Tomorrow: Captain Cold Will Still Join the Legion of Doom

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim on the plan for Snart and the upcoming "Camelot/3000" episode.

On Legends of Tomorrow recently, Mick Rory/Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) has been seeing visions of his deceased friend Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) appearing and speaking to him. What stands out here though is that last summer, when it was announced Legends would be introducing the Legion of Doom (including Malcolm Merlyn, Reverse-Flash and Damien Darhk), Captain Cold was included on the list of members. However, so far, the Legion of Doom has been operating without Snart, while his appearances have only been in relation to Rory.

But that will change soon, promises Legends of Tomorrow co-creator/EP Marc Guggenheim, who told me Captain Cold is still going to join the Legion. In advance of tonight’s new episode – pointedly titled “The Legion of Doom” – Guggenheim explained the plan for Captain Cold and a bit more on what’s to come, including the upcoming episode “Camelot/3000,” whose title clearly references the Mike W. Barr/Brian Bolland limited series Camelot 3000 from the 1980s.

IGN: With Snart, it seemed like Rory's issues might be resolved as far as seeing him. But last summer at Comic-Con, it was announced that Snart would be a member of the Legion of Doom. Is that still on the table?

Marc Guggenheim: You know what, I'll say it. I don't mind spoiling this. Captain Cold definitely will become a member of the Legion of Doom. What we wanted to do was the first time we saw Snart we wanted to defy expectations. But now that we've done that, we definitely want to go through with our original plan. We are going to go through with our original plan of making him a member of the Legion of Doom. So much of this show is about surprising the audience. We thought it would be fun for an episode to bring Snart back in a way that everyone was not expecting.

IGN: Because you had the benefit of seeing everyone's performances as these characters prior to this season on the various shows, was it great for you guys already knowing the energy that these actors bring to these roles when you come up with the Legion of Doom scenes?

Guggenheim: Oh, it's so much fun. Episode 210 [airing this week] is something that we wanted to do from the very beginning. We wanted to do a Legion of Doom-centric episode. It's an episode basically from the point of view of the Legion of Doom. And it's a blast. You can only do that on a show as zany as this, and you can only do that when you have great actors who have created these characters that are so vibrant and interesting that you want to spend the whole episode with them. That's a lot of fun.

IGN: You’ve also got an episode called "Camelot/3000" coming up.

Guggenheim: Yeah, that's a great episode. Actually Phil [Klemmer] and I were just on the editing room for that yesterday. I think the show does a great job with the production value and creating different time periods and Camelot sets a new bar. I will say, just managing expectations, we are not doing our adaptation of Camelot 3000 by Mike W. Barr. That slash in the title, Camelot/3000 is very much there for a reason. I'll just say it takes place in two time periods - the year 3000, and it takes place in Camelot. I was like, if we have an episode where we happen to be in Camelot and we happen to be in the year 3000 and we don't call it some variation of Camelot 3000, we're doing something wrong. That's sort of all I'll say.

IGN: Legends was recently renewed for Season 3. While you didn’t wipe the slate clean, you did change up the team a bit in Season 2, with some members coming and going. Is that something you think will happen as the show continues?

Guggenheim: We've always said that that was part of the design of the show, that we always wanted to do that, so I definitely wouldn't rule it out. At the same time, we really are so focused on ending the season in as strong a manner as possible. We really haven’t looked ahead to Season 3 yet.
