There are loads of good reasons to get a tattoo: Just had your first child? Get a tattoo of its face. Your dog's just died? It can't be dead when it's tattooed on your arm. Your mate bets you that you won't get a tattoo? Also a reason to permanently scar yourself. And that's what happened to me.
A year ago, a friend and colleague of mine, Daniel Krupa, attended Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim. Unfortunately, I wasn't given the nod to go and therefore had to read about all the amazing things on offer at the show - including an on-site tattoo pavilion! I teased him at the time for not taking full advantage of the trip and getting himself a Star Wars themed tattoo, and over the year that followed he questioned whether I would've indeed taken advantage of such an activity. Then they brought Star Wars Celebration to London. The place where I live.
"I bet you wouldn't get one"
"I bet I would"
"Can I design it?"
"Why the chuff not?"
We worked up an initial silly idea: an Ewok dressed up as Chewbacca for Halloween. We figured that if the Star Wars universe has an equivalent of Christmas (Life Day, come on) it'll probably have a Halloween-type holiday too.
The first design looked a little rough but I was told this was done on an iPhone whilst standing up on a busy tube train. I actually quite like it and have genuinely entertained the idea of getting it done but I think that says more about me than the design:
The design then moved on to this little fella:
Before finally becoming this:
There were a fair few tattoo artists at Star Wars Celebration but I picked the ridiculously talented Clara Sinclair who has actually won awards for her Star Wars tattoos. Usually she does beautiful stuff like this:
But Clara's a massive nerd and thought our design was cute, so she was absolutely bang up for it.
Getting a tattoo in public is quite a strange experience because people are watching you wince and try not to cry but not wanting to break down in public turns out to be quite a strong feeling. I was a big fan of the Stormtrooper helmet we added on the morning of and was paying too much attention to how cute the little guy looked to care.
As bets go, it's not like I've had to get "CANCUN 9T5" tattooed on my arse or anything so I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. If you're out at Star Wars Celebration 2017 in Orlando, you should definitely look Clara up, bet or no bet.
All healed up.
Gav Murphy makes silly videos for IGN because nobody has thought to ask him to stop. Yet. Feel free to ask him yourself.
