Phil Tippett's creations, and those of his Tippett Studio, have brought to life some of the most memorable creatures and moments from film over the last few decades. And as some of Tippett's unused creature designs get a second chance at life in the upcoming AR game HoloGrid, IGN took a tour of the studio.
Ahead of HoloGrid: Monster Battle's mobile release, IGN took a look at props, models, and more from Tippett Studio's various award-winning work, from contributions to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope through films like RoboCop, Jumanji, Hellboy, and Cloverfield. Take a look at the gallery below to see a host of models from those films and more:
"It was at a period of time when a lot of new stuff was happening, and it was all experimental and fun. So you were just making stuff up out of nothing," Tippett said of designing creatures for films back in the days of the original Star Wars.
Tippett describes the work of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Verhoeven — three directors he worked with on Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and RoboCop, respectively — as "really, really encouraging" to himself and those working on the films. Tippett's work with those directors and others has earned him several Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Visual Effects in 1993 for Jurassic Park.
"There was a tremendous amount of artistic imagination and process that went into that stuff," Tippett said of his earliest work with these directors. Now, with some of those franchises back in vogue, Tippett notes that "we have to make something the audience is expecting" because of the standards set by his and others' experimental work on those earlier films.
Some of that "experimental" work in Tippet's career included original creations that ended up not being used in projects, though Tippett explains that "all of the characters [I created] had a function in a former life, and they filled that function or they didn't." Some of those creatures are now finding a second starring opportunity in HappyGiant's HoloGrid: Monster Battle, an AR mobile game (with plans for ports to other VR and AR platforms like HoloLens currently in development) inspired by Tippett's work on the HoloChess scene in A New Hope.
HoloGrid is working in partnership with Tippett Studio, which has also been dabbling with virtual reality projects itself, to use some of Tippett's originally designed creatures — the models of which are viewable in the gallery above — as monsters in the mashup of collectible card games, board games, and AR. HoloGrid is currently set for an iOS and Android launch in early 2017.
