After a Buddy System was discovered in the code of Pokemon Go, Niantic Labs and The Pokemon Company have confirmed the new feature is indeed in the works and is "just around the corner."
According to an update post from the development team, the feature will allow players to select one Pokemon from their collection and make it their buddy, which will then in turn open up "unique in-game rewards and experiences." For example, walking with a Buddy Pokemon will award the player with additional Candy.
Additionally, the profile screen will showcase the player's Buddy Pokemon alongside their Trainer avatar. The selected Buddy Pokemon can be swapped out for a different Pokemon from the player's collection at any time.
