How to Use Pokemon Go's New Buddy System

This page contains information on the Buddy System in Pokemon Go. Using the Buddy System, trainers can choose one of their Pokemon to be their buddy, which earns Candy for their pokemon buddy by walking a certain distance.

This was supposed to be included in the US Pokémon GO update 0.37.0 for Android and 1.7.0 for iOS on the 10th of September 2016, but North American pokemon trainers have yet to see the update go live.

Trainers can choose a pokemon as their buddy, and will earn that type's candy after walking a certain distance.

When you choose your buddy, you probably want one that isn't already at Max CP / evolution.

You'll also want to keep in mind how rare your pokemon is, since their rarity determines how far you'll have to walk to receive your free candy. Pokeassistant has a great chart showcasing how far each buddy will need to walk before generating a candy.

If you manage to evolve your buddy to the highest level, or just want to get candy for another pokemon, you can swap your buddy in the Buddy menu.

Be warned, however, that any progress you'd made with your current buddy will be lost when swapping, so it's best to do it just after receiving a candy.

This chart denotes how far each Pokemon must be walked as a buddy until it will drop a candy.

Reddit Pokemon Go repository The Silph Raod reports that the most recent Pokemon Go update adds a neat new Easter Egg. The new Buddy System allows you to select a Pokemon partner to walk alongside your trainer icon.

If you select Pikachu as your buddy and then walk 10 kilometers, Pikachu hops onto your shoulder, a clear reference to Pikachu's habit of riding on Ash's shoulder in the Pokemon animated series.
