How To Get Started With Microsoft HoloLens

IGN's how to guide to HoloLens will teach you how to set up and get started with Microsoft's new AR headset. The HoloLens is a self-contained computer, so there's no need to pair it with a PC for most things. Instead, simply remove the unit from its box and use the wheel on the rear of the halo to adjust it to your head size.

The small power button is located on the left rear-corner of the halo. Volume controls are located in the top-right. press the power button to begin.

Resist the temptation to point at things with your finger. Point up at the ceiling instead, thumb out, index finger up, hand perpendicular to your body, and to click, just make a clicking motion to select things, or say "Select" out loud.

Point with your head, using the small dot as a cursor. When you're hovering over a button or object and ready to select something, the HoloLens icon will change from a dot to a donut. Then use that clicking motion and you're good to go.

Also learn pinch scrolling (works by pinching the page, scrolling your hand, and releasing), grabbing objects in 3D space, (again, with a pinch and hold motion), and most importantly, Blooming. Blooming sounds weird but it's actually pretty simple. Ball your fist with the back of your hands facing the floor, and then spread all your fingers up at once.

Blooming is really, really important because it's how you summon the main menu when you lose it. Bloom anywhere at any time to bring the menu back.

Wifi setup is in the Settings section of the main menu. Select Settings and click on it (or say "Select") and then navigate to the Network and Internet submenu.

Select your local Wifi network from those listed and enter the password.

How To Take Pictures and Video

At the bottom of the main menu are two buttons, one for still photos, one for video. Pressing the still photo button enters photo mode. Your next click after photo mode takes a still picture.

Please note that:

  • It's important for you to stay still when snapping to avoid blur
  • You should hold the snapping finger at the very edge of your vision or else you get a big picture of your hand
  • Bloom to end the recording

When taking video, you'll have a brief countdown timer after your recording click and then the recording begins. Bloom to end the recording.

Remember, you can reach these tools from anywhere, at any time, just by Blooming the main menu.

The MicroUSB port for charging is located just above the power button on the left side of the halo. Use the included AC adapter to charge HoloLens. A computer USB port does not provide sufficient power. Also note that a small power indicator exists just above the power stud on the HoloLens.

  • You can leave interfaces all over a room and they'll still be there when you get back.
  • You can use the Hologram App to place holograms all over the room. You can use the menus at the bottom to move, rotate, and resize these.
  • You can add new games and apps from the store.
  • When in doubt, power-off, then back on.
