Black Lightning TV Series in the Works

A television series based on the DC superhero Black Lightning is in development.

According to Deadline, Greg Berlanti -- executive producer of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow -- is partnering with Mara Brock Akil (The Game) and her husband Salim Akil to create a Black Lightning TV series. The outlet has heard that Warner Bros. TV, Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions are currently pitching the DC-inspired drama to various networks.

Black Lightning, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden

Black Lightning (aka Jefferson Pierce) is an African American superhero who can generate and control lightning. The character, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden in 1977, is a high school principal and Olympic athlete who becomes a crime-fighting vigilante dedicated to cleaning the streets of Metropolis.

The series will see Pierce, having hung up his suit years prior, pulled back into the superhero life after his daughter begins fighting for justice and a student gets pulled into a local gang. Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil are writing and executive producing Black Lightning, with Berlanti and Sarah Schechter also on board as executive producers.
