Game of Thrones fans rejoice, because Season 7 is finally in production.
After a weather-related delay, Entertainment Weekly is reporting cameras have started rolling on the penultimate Game of Thrones season. Little is known about Season 7: it will be seven episodes long, has four directors and has a bunch of vague character descriptions that may or may not overlap with book characters (more on that in a bit). But with work getting started on the seventh season of the show, now is the perfect time to look ahead and speculate about what we hope will happen when Game of Thrones returns in summer 2017.
Spoilers for Game of Thrones: Season 6 continue below!
When Game of Thrones cast Jim Broadbent as its first new actor added in Season 7, many people jumped to assume he could be a key maester Sam meets in Oldtown. Regardless of whether the Oscar winner is in Sam's storyline, the Oldtown location could prove to be one of the most important settings on the show. There are a lot of potential answers in the Oldtown library, and ones that could be exactly what Westeros needs to fight back against the White Walker threat. If Sam had made it to Oldtown several seasons ago, viewers likely could have expected him to stay there for years. But with only two short seasons of Game of Thrones left, let's get to the point of Oldtown quickly so it doesn't overstay its welcome (cough Braavos).
With Daenerys heading to Westeros and Cersei sitting on the Iron Throne, many, many, many fans are expecting the two queens to clash in the coming season -- some rumors even suggest that it's very likely to happen. As Game of Thrones heads into its final two seasons, it's going to be delivering more and more satisfying moments like when Jon Snow and Sansa reunited and Ramsay Bolton was killed. Seeing two of the most powerful rulers come face-to-face and then grapple for the rights to the Iron Throne will be a long time coming for both Dany and Cersei. That way the focus can shift to the battle with the White Walkers over Westeros in Season 8.
Daenerys sent away Jorah yet again in Season 6, but this time with a quest: to not come back until he had found a way to cure Greyscale. Since she -- and the show -- presumably didn't send off an important character only to die of the disease he was tasked with fixing, Game of Thrones shouldn't leave that thread dangling for too long. Iain Glen has been a significant presence on the show since Season 1, and the best use of his journey would be to sync him up with a new character. (Like Jerome Flynn's Bronn, Glen's Jorah delivers no matter who he's paired with.) Hey, maybe Jorah will also head to Oldtown to find some answers, and there cross paths with Sam! Hopefully he's back doing something relevant in Season 7, but unless the cure to Greyscale is going to be some gamechanger for the story as a whole, it's better not to drag this out into the final season.
Viewers finally saw Lyanna Stark in action in Game of Thrones: Season 6, and now it's time to see Rhaegar Targaryen. Considering HBO already confirmed (spoiler?) that Rhaegar is in fact Jon Snow's father, it's necessary to introduce him in a big way to underline why Jon's parentage is so important. One of the casting briefs for Season 7 (the "young lord") seems to suggest that Rhaegar will appear this season, and it should have even more impact than meeting Lyanna did. Rhaegar is a character who's been discussed for seasons, but his legacy and the fact he makes Jon half-Targaryen seem to be incredibly important to the story Game of Thrones is telling.
The reunion of Sansa and Jon was partially so impactful because these were two Starks who didn't really have much of a connection prior to their family being split up; seeing how emotional they were when they found a long lost sibling conveyed just how important family is to the last remaining members of House Stark. While Bran eventually crossing paths with Jon and Sansa will be moving, it's the reunion between Sansa and Arya that is the longest coming. Please don't let them die before they have a chance to see each other again!
Let's face it: sooner or later, the White Walkers are getting into Westeros. A long-popular theory is that, in doing so, they'll bring the Wall down with them. That imagery would be incredible, and is one of those theories that would be satisfying to see happen regardless of the fact fans have been expecting it for years. Even if the Wall doesn't fall, it's high time the White Walkers finally make their attack, and they should make their move in Season 7.
Is he really still rowing? All kidding aside, Game of Thrones never leaves a storyline dangling without fully intending to pick it up later. The question over Gendry's whereabouts has increased with each passing season, now becoming a bit of a joke. While it might work to wait until the final season to bring him back, like many things on this list, that works best if it's going to have a game-changing impact on the big picture story. Chances are Gendry won't be that important, but hopefully he has something important to do to pay off all those years of waiting for his return.
