Nintendo has given the first official statement regarding a difference in performance between the Nintendo Switch in its docked and undocked modes.
In a press release entry for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo writes that the game will "play in TV mode in up to 1080p". Given that the Switch controller touchscreen has a 720p resolution, it's the first time the company has confirmed the long-rumoured upgrade when docked.
It's likely that the console is able to output in 1080p when in handheld mode, but to do so would compromise an already fairly short battery life.
IGN staff at Switch events noticed no dip in framerate or general performance (besides resolution) when playing both Splatoon 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in both modes.
An attendee at the Switch showcase in Japan has reportedly been told by Nintendo representatives that Breath of the Wild outputs at 900p in TV mode and 720p in Handheld mode.
Last month, reports emerged saying that the Switch's GPU runs 40% slower when out-of-dock, although this hasn't been formally tested at time of writing.
Joe Skrebels is IGN's UK News Editor, and he suspects runs 40% slower when playing Switch on the move, too. Follow him on Twitter.
