New Nintendo Online Subscription Service Details

The Nintendo Switch will feature an Online Service new to Nintendo consoles. This service will be free at launch, then it will become a paid service starting Fall 2017.

The Nintendo Switch Online Service will allow players to play compatible co-op and competitive games online with a Nintendo Account, and similar to other online services, offer a free monthly game download to subscribers. Nintendo specifically names NES and Super NES games with newly-added online play as their free download titles. However, these free games serve as demos, and only last for the month before you are offered to buy the game or you will be unable to play it further. Subscribers will also get special offers and discounts on digital games and content.

The Nintendo Switch Online Service will use a dedicated smart device app to connect to the Nintendo Switch Console. It will let players Invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends, while enjoying online matches in compatible games, all from a smart device. The free, limited version of this app will be available Summer 2017.  The paid online service will only be available in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico at launch.

The online service is only for Nintendo Switch and will not affect Wii U or 3DS online features. Nintendo detailed that most games will require a subscription to the service to play online.

Note that those who do not wish to use the online service can still use the eShop, manage friends, share screenshots via social media, and use the Parental Controls.

Nintendo has yet to reveal how much a subscription to its online service costs. This section will be updated as soon as it does.

Nintendo's online program uses the My Nintendo account service. If you've already created an account, be sure to use that one so you carry over points from the rewards program.

To create an account, go to my.nintendo.com and follow the instructions on the website. You can create a Nintendo Account using an existing Nintendo Network ID, Facebook, Google, or Twitter account.

Using the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart device app, parents can limit online capabilites for players. In addtion to completely restricting access to certain games, the Parental Controls can set what media players can share on social networks and whether or not the player can use online communication features in specific or all games.

Restrictions for the Nintendo eShop can be set through your Nintendo Account.
