More Heroes Join Marvel's Captain America Event Comic

Will Captain America heal a divided Marvel Universe?

Update: Marvel released a new teaser featuring the character roster for Secret Empire, one featuring actual character art and the tagline "United We Stand."

While still presumably a Captain America-centric story, it appears that Secret Empire will also feature Old Man Logan, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Rocket Raccoon, Black Bolt, Black Widow and Deadpool. Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday drew this teaser, suggesting he might be involved in the project itself.

Marvel also released several more variants of the original teaser this week, each one geared towards a different hero or team. Check out a slideshow of all these teasers below:

Update: CBR debuted a new version of the teaser with the tagline "The Secret Empire Will Avenge You."

Marvel's next major event comic may be focused on Captain America and Hydra double agent Steve Rogers. That's the impression Marvel gave when they released this teaser image today:

The image was accompanied by the Abraham Lincoln quote "A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand." This is a clear reference to the fallout of Civil War II, which only very recently wrapped up and which has left a great deal of bad blood lingering among Marvel's heroes. The Marvel U. is a fractured and divided place currently, and those tensions look to play directly into Secret Empire.

Marvel didn't release any other information about Secret Empire, but it's probably safe to assume that Captain America: Steve Rogers and Captain America: Sam Wilson writer Nick Spencer will be involved. Secret Empire could be a crossover between those two books, or it could be a separate mini-series that ties into both. Either way, it seems very likely that Secret Empire will deal with Spencer's controversial decision to make Steve Rogers a secret Hydra agent from childhood. We've seen the effects of that heel turn play out in the pages of Captain America: Steve Rogers already, and Secret Empire could mark the point where Cap's secret is finally revealed to his superhero colleagues. That definitely wouldn't help the already divided makeup of Marvel's heroes in 2017.

It's also worth noting that The Secret Empire is a clandestine terrorist organization in the Marvel U. with close ties to Hydra. Perhaps this story will introduce a new incarnation of the group to rival Red Skull's resurgent Hydra?

We'll keep you updated as Marvel reveals more information about Secret Empire in the weeks to come.
