Live by Night was one of three new films that bombed at the domestic box office this weekend, earning just $5.4 million.
Warner Bros.' gangster film starring Ben Affleck failed to crack the top 10, opening wide in eleventh place. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the film has a long way to go before reaching profitability, as Live by Night cost a net total of $65 million to produce. The movie may not even hit the $6 million mark by the end of the four-day weekend, and is also performing poorly internationally, debuting to just $3.3 million overseas.
Silence, the new historical drama from director Martin Scorsese, also underwhelmed at the box office, earning a mere $1.9 million over the weekend. The film, which boasted a $50 million production budget, is on track to be one of the lowest-earning films in Scorsese's career.
Rounding out the trio of box office bombs is Monster Trucks, which earned $10.5 million over the weekend. Director Chris Wedge's action film cost a whopping $125 million to make, and is projected to make $14.1 million over the four-day holiday weekend. So far, Monster Trucks has made $14.7 million overseas, making for a projected worldwide total of $28.8 million.
This weekend also brought with it the debut of STX's horror film The Bye Bye Man and a new crime thriller called Sleepless. The former placed fifth at the box office with $13.4 million, while the latter opened in eighth place, earning $8.5 million.
After climbing to the top of the box office last weekend, Hidden Figures held strong in first place with $20.5 million. La La Land followed in second, earning $14.5 million, while Sing and Rogue One placed third and fourth, respectively.
