Doomfist Might Not Be the Next Overwatch Hero After All

Sucker punch.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan appears to have poured cold water on the widely-held belief that the (possibly Terry Crews-voiced) Doomfist will be the next character released for the shooter.

In an Overwatch forum thread otherwise about new emotes for existing characters, Kaplan reconfirmed that "we have multiple new heroes being worked on right now", before stating that "[the 24th hero] is not who you think it is."

Following subtle hints and a campaign by Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Crews to voice the character, it's been the general assumption that Doomfist would be number 24 - Kaplan appears to be telling us that's not the case.

Adding more intrigue, what does seem clear is that Overwatch's next major update will be a new hero. Speaking in the same thread about how Blizzard prioritises its work on releasing new content, Kaplan says:

"We're always asking ourselves 'what would make the biggest impact for the most people' when we prioritise. Right now, we feel like introducing a new hero to the line-up would be more impactful to the game. Hope that makes sense."

All of which leaves the question of who that new hero will be. As pointed out by Eurogamer, a good candidate might be a character known only as "Greek". Around a month ago, voice actor Alex Malaos updated and subsequently un-updated his CV (archived here) with mention of his work on the game for a character with that name.

Voice acting is traditionally one of the last pieces put into the game design puzzle, so this could well point to a character well into final production. More anecdotally, the game's Greek-set Ilios map is one of few Overwatch locations left without a direct tie to the game's characters and/or animated shorts.

Overwatch has traditionally dropped a new piece of content per month - with the Year of the Rooster event having come out just under a month ago, we may not have too long to wait.
