While Skyrim is on its way to Nintendo Switch, comments from Bethesda's Todd Howard have made it unclear whether the version coming is a port of the 2011 original, the 2016 Special Edition, or a new custom-built version.
In an interview with Polygon, the publisher's executive producer was asked what version of the game would be coming to Nintendo's new console, to which he answered that he "can't say".
The Special Edition of the game included all of Skyrim's DLC, and included graphical upgrades and mod support for consoles. We awarded the console version an 8/10, saying it "recaptures and beautifies the legendary RPG".
It's unclear exactly what Howard's comments mean. With the full power of the Switch hardware still a relative mystery, there's a chance that the hybrid console can't run the updated version of the game at the desired performance.
Perhaps more likely is that Nintendo is uneasy with game modding on console (a move that apparently caused problems at Sony, too), meaning it can't truly be called the Special Edition.
It may also simply be a case of PR planning - Bethesda may want to announce the Special Edition for Switch on its own terms, leading Howard to answer in noncommittal fashion.
Skyrim on Switch will be released in Fall 2017.
Later today, Howard will be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame for his contribution to the games industry. You can watch that, and the rest of the 20th DICE Awards ceremony it's a part of, right here on IGN.
