Apocalypse Now Game Quits Kickstarter, Asks for $5 Million

"You will not be charged unless we [...] raise the money to make the game you deserve."

The developer for Apocalypse Now has relocated the campaign to its own crowdfunding site after failing to secure funding via Kickstarter.

To date, the Kickstarter drive - which describes the game as "like Fallout: New Vegas on acid in Vietnam" - has secured just $172,969 of the $900K target with just nine days left to go.

Unlike Kickstarter, there's no finite end date for the campaign on the new site, and backers will not be charged until the full amount has been raised. Pledges made to the original Kickstarter project can move their backing to the new platform, where every "hardcore" backer will receive a reward tier upgrade, essentially getting the rewards of the next tier up for no extra cost.

The new campaign aims to achieve $5.9 million, and to date has raised $62,765.

"The ApocalypseNow.com website operates like any crowdfunding platform, you will not be charged unless we are successful in raising the money we require to make the game you deserve," states developer Erebus, which comprises Battlefield, Gears of War, and Witcher alumni, as well as support from Francis Ford Coppola himself, director of the seminal war film of the same name.

"ApocalypseNow.com will be an engaging space where fans and backers can get the latest updates, communicate with the team making the game and continue to support the project through the entirety of the game's development cycle.

"The team will rely on this dialogue with the community to help them to create an Apocalypse Now game worthy of the motion picture in every way."

According to a press release for the project, players "will have the ability to make their own decisions independent of the original narrative. As players navigate the unspeakable horrors of the Vietnam War, their reactions to each situation will result in consequences that will alter their journey as the story unfolds. Every decision matters, and each player will tell their own story."

Apocalypse Now is being developed with a planned 2020 launch window.
