Thanos Returns for Guardians of the Galaxy Finale

The Mad Titan returns.

Brian Michael Bendis will be bringing back Thanos to battle the Guardians of the Galaxy for his final issue of the series.

The Guardians series finale will be drawn by artist Valerio Schiti.

“Thanos will be returning for my final issue of Guardians, which is at least double-sized,” Bendis told IGN in a phone interview. “It's a very big finale and it wraps up a great deal of things that characters in the book have been questing for my entire run. That includes a pretty major showdown between the Guardians and Thanos right here on Earth.”

Bendis holds the record for the longest-running run on Guardians, just as he was the longest-running writer on Avengers, but while he ended his Avengers run on a quiet note, he decided to go big for Guardians, and who’s bigger than Thanos?

“We've been planning the finale and when I left Avengers I thought it would be cool to end gently just to gently pass the torch to Jonathan [Hickman], and looking back, though I wouldn't have changed the story, I think I would have ended on a bigger note. Like, I think the amount of time that I spent on Avengers and being the longest-running Avengers writer ever that I should have gone out with a big blockbuster ending. I was reminded by someone at Marvel, I'm the longest running Guardians of the Galaxy writer ever and I'm going to make the effort to go out really big with the help of the writer who's coming after me,” Bendis explained, referring Gerry Duggan, writer of the recently-announced All-New Guardians of the Galaxy series with artist Aaron Kuder and colorist Ive Svorcina that will follow up his run.

Currently, the Guardians are stranded on Earth after their ship was blown up during a big battle during Civil War II. To make matters worse, Gamora and Drax learned that Peter knew Thanos was imprisoned there on Earth and kept it secret from them. Disgruntled with their leader, the team decided to go their separate ways. This sets up the current “Grounded” storyline where the characters are off on their own going through their own personal crucibles. They will, presumably, come back together to take on Thanos, who will, presumably, have found a way to break out of the Triskelion prison where he currently resides after being caught at the start of Bendis' Civil War II.

Guardians of the Galaxy #19 hits in April for $4.99 and will be an oversized issue.
