Sony has revealed that Rocket League - the indie sensation released in 2015 - was the most downloaded game on the PS Store in 2016.
The soccer-with-cars competitive game topped the all-formats lists in the EU, and in North America, presumably down to its series of free DLC updates, $20 price point, and repeated appearance in sales.
We called Rocket League "a fast, fluid, absurdly good time" when it came out, and its enduring popularity is best shown by the fact that we recently called its latest port one of the best Xbox One games of 2016.
There were more surprises to be found in other categories, too. In North America, Job Simulator beat out Batman VR to become the most downloaded PSVR game since release, while Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth beat Minecraft to top the Vita list.
The top 20 most downloaded PS4 games in North America were as follows:
- 1. Rocket League
- 2. Battlefield 1
- 3. Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition
- 4. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
- 5. Tom Clancy’s The Division
- 6. Grand Theft Auto V
- 7. Overwatch: Origins Edition
- 8. Battlefield 4
- 9. No Man’s Sky
- 10. EA Sports FIFA 17
- 11. NBA 2K17
- 12. Need for Speed
- 13. Star Wars Battlefront
- 14. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
- 15. Battlefield Hardline
- 16. Madden NFL 17
- 17. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
- 18. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
- 19. The Last Of Us Remastered
- 20. Final Fantasy XV
