Pokemon Go Was Most Downloaded Apple App in 2016

Nintendo properties dominated mobile in 2016.

Pokemon Go was the most downloaded app in the App Store in 2016, Apple has announced.

The mid-year hit from Niantic took the top spot in the list, but it wasn't the only Nintendo-related app to appear in the top 10 most downloaded apps. Super Mario Run was also among the top ten most downloaded apps worldwide for 2016. Super Mario Run has already been downloaded over 50 million times since its release in December and was the most downloaded app globally on both Christmas and New Year's Day, according to Apple.

Apple also announced a few milestones for the App Store, including that New Year's Day 2017 delivered nearly $240 million in purchases, making it the highest single day ever for the App Store. In addition, developers earned over $20 billion in 2016, up 40% from 2015 while the App Store now offers 2.2 million apps, which is up over 20% from 2015.

In other recent Super Mario Run news, Android users can now pre-register to download the game although no release date for the platform has been given just yet.
