The Americans has always been excellent, but FX’s story of two undercover Russian spies in 1980s America solidified itself as one of the greatest shows on TV this past year, with its best season so far. In Season 4, the Jennings dealt with ever-escalating threats, including terrifying bioweapons, along with the ongoing danger that their true identities would be exposed. As the season progressed, we saw several characters encounter notably permanent and upsetting consequences for their actions, with The Americans proving it would never play things safe. It was incredibly intense and involving to see the Jennings begin to reach their breaking point, and what occurred felt like the sadly inevitable outcome of everything set up in previous years of the show. As always, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys were amazing, helping us continue to empathize with Elizabeth and Philip, even as they kept finding themselves having to commit some very dark acts in the name of their mission. For these reasons and many more, The Americans is IGN’s pick for the best TV Series of 2016.
