Ben Affleck's gangster flick Live by Night has lost a lot of money for Warner Bros.
According to Variety's insiders, the critical disaster will see the studio behind it looking at a 75% loss. Live by Night has made $16.5 million globally on a $65 million budget, and that's not counting the millions more that went towards marketing the film. Variety notes that the film probably won't have much success in the international market either, as such period pieces - with no Oscar nominations attached - tend to repel punters.
Warner Bros. is hoping to recuperate some of its losses through home entertainment sales and TV licencing deals.
We said that Live by Night "boasts impeccable casting, period recreation, action set-pieces, and cinematography, but it’s marred by a disjointed narrative and some choppy pacing" in our review of the film.
