Batman and Flash Are Watching the Watchmen

What is the secret of the button? Who does it serve?

Last year, DC Universe Rebirth #1 teased a major confrontation between DC's heroes and the cast of Watchmen. DC is taking a major step towards that confrontation this spring with a crossover storyline called "The Button." This story will unite Batman and Flash as these two superhero detectives investigate the mystery of the Comedian's iconic smiley face button and what it means for the future of the DCU.

This crossover will unfold in the pages of Batman #21-22 and The Flash #21-22 in April and May. Writer Tom King and artist Jason Fabok will handle the Batman chapters, while writer Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter will tackle the Flash chapters.

The story will pick up where DC Universe Rebirth #1 left off, as Batman and Flash try to comprehend the significance of the Comedian's pin that Batman unearthed deep in the Batcave. However, DC is teasing that this investigation will attract the attention of another major player, and that this crossover will begin a "countdown" to the climax of the Rebirth saga. "Countdown" is quite the loaded word for DC, ever since 2005's Countdown to Infinite Crisis #1 paved the way for that particular event.

Both series will continue to carry their standard $2.99 cover price during the crossover, though DC revealed that all four issues will also feature special $3.99 variant covers with lenticular art designed by Fabok. The two images above showcase both halves of the lenticular cover for Batman #21.

Look for "The Button" to begin in Batman #21 in April. Until then, check out some of the other major comics we're looking forward to in 2017.
