What to Expect from Seth Rogen's Video Game-Inspired TV Series

"It's a journey of a guy becoming a janitor to potentially be the savior of mankind."

When Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson) scores big in his favorite video game, The Biotic Wars, his success brings characters from the game -- from the future -- to his door. Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson) are from a war-embroiled 2162, and they travel to 2017 because they believe Josh is the Chosen One. But, he's not all they expected him to be. Hulu's Future Man will explore Josh's journey. And it involves semen.

"It's instrumental to the plot," executive producer and showrunner Ben Karlin said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, calling an early scene "foreshadowing semen."

The tone of the science fiction/action/time travel/comedy leans into the raunchy, but executive producer and director Seth Rogen clarified, "We don't want to make something that's alienating, at the end of the day. We want to be inclusive with our material, not exclusive. We like things that make you question why you're liking it."

In a series when a video game turns out to be the future reality, the sci-fi influences are strong. The Last Starfighter instantly comes to mind. Rogen joked they were failing to get rights to the 1984 film though, so they cited it as an influence and moved on. The Last Starfighter isn't the only cinematic influence for Future Man. "It's inspired by a lot of sci-fi movies we grew up watching," Rogen said. "Any sci-fi movie released in the last 35 years has influenced the show."

Rogen cited Terminator 2, for example, “We very much want the show to exist in a world where all those movies are real. Josh's unique power is a knowledge of those movies and how that knowledge may influence your decision-making when put in actual situations that reflect those movies.”

Future Man isn't your average rehash of the Chosen One story though. Much to the shock of Tiger and Wolf, Josh isn't like his gamer persona. They find him underwhelming. In real life, Hutcherson isn't much of a gamer. He joked he did buy “a game” when he got the gig. His character has way more experience in that arena, but he's not exactly physically capable. "It's a journey of a guy becoming a janitor to potentially be the savior of mankind," Rogen said. Hutcherson added Josh is a very honest character who brings humanity and empathy to Tiger and Wolf. Josh will grow as a character, but as Rogen put it, "He never becomes proficient at violence."

Karlin said, "We tried to make it about how else we can define heroism without that whole traditional Luke becomes a Jedi."

As for that resistance group Tiger and Wolf are part of in The Biotic Wars. They're called the Anti-Biotics. Rogen confirmed that and said they'd have Pro-Biotics as well. “We do every pun you can imagine,” Rogen said.

All episodes of Future Man will premiere on Hulu on Tuesday, November 14, 2017.
