Lucha Underground: Season 4 Renewal "Looks Good"

El Rey Network's chief creative officer discusses the show's future.

Today at the Television Critics Association press tour, I spoke to El Rey Network's chief creative officer Skip Chaisson about the prospects for Lucha Underground.

Currently in the midst of wrapping up the back half of its third season, Lucha Underground hasn't been gifted with a fourth season renewal yet, and while Chaisson couldn't confirm one for us solidly, he did say that the show's future "looks good" and that one of the things really being discussed right now is where to place it on the network's schedule going forward. He and famed filmmaker/network head Robert Rodriguez love the show and can't wait to make more.

Chaisson also couldn't confirm which stars might be returning to the series, or any new stars that the network might have their eyes on, but he did laud the passion of the wrestlers.

"I can't emphasize enough just how giving the wrestlers are," he said, "and just working with Eric [Van Wagenen, EP] and Chris [DeJoseph, Co-EP] - it's just so much fun. It's really tough to shoot, but everybody just gives so much because, for the wrestlers, it's a different thing for them. Because they are wonderful stage performers but here they get to do stuff they don't normally get to do, and extend the story and the character. They get to film really cool fight scenes and some have effects. It's like play time. It's long like any shoot, but it's really fun. The wrestlers give 150%."

"The whole experience is just an awesome amalgam," Chaisson added. "Everybody really likes it and we can't wait to get back into it."

At the same time, thanks in part to the success of Lucha Underground, El Rey announced today their new series Bushido Battleground. The new, ten-episode, two-hour series will showcase elite fighters in the full contact sports of MMA, submission Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai matches from around the world.

Part documentary/part travelogue, and with fights that are 100% real, Bushido Battleground will be a multifaceted sporting event that feels like a feature film. Matches will be held in locations around the world, ranging from Thailand to the Mexico to Los Angeles.
