Rob Lowe Investigates the Paranormal Because Why TF Not

Ghost stories and creature conspiracies creating bonding moments for the Lowes.

Rob Lowe and his sons, Matthew and John Owen, hit the road and investigate everything from mythological creatures to famous paranormal happenings in A&E's The Lowe Files - premiering Wednesday, August 2nd. And yes, you read all of that correctly. And no, this isn't a spoof of ghost hunting shows. It's the real deal.

Being just as much of a father/son bonding show as it is a search for spooky hidden truths, The Lowe Files stars appeared at the Television Critics Association press tour to chat about their new series, which Rob Lowe described as "Anthony Bourdain in a blender with Scooby-Doo."

"When I was eight-years-old I saw the Roger Corman movie The Legend of Boggy Creek," Lowe revealed, "and it so traumatized me that I've been obsessed with bigfoot ever since." Yes, the idea for this show wasn't just a random pairing of "Rob Lowe plus ghosts" as the Lowe household has been fascinated by the supernatural for decades. Telling ghost stories and asking big questions about the paranormal was how Rob and his sons bonded throughout the years. "To go out and do this is a like an eight-year-old boy trapped in a 53-year-old man's body's dream."

"Part of the whole concept of the show is that it's the journey," Lowe stated, "and it creates memories for us while giving us an excuse to be together, so if we don't find actual results, it's really not all that important. So when we did find results, which we did in a couple shows in particular, it was mind-blowing. When we delivered the first cut to the network they were like 'You made this up, right?' But no, absolutely everything we captured was authentic."

Whether Rob and his sons are investigating a possible secret alien base of the California coast or hunting bigfoot in the backwoods of Oklahoma, Lowe insists that the connective tissue between being a good father and decent ghost hunter is enthusiasm. "Being able to keep up with these guys and their interests and their world, which is a much different world than I get up in, you have to keep your eyes open and be open to things. Enthusiastic, eyes open. That's my version of 'Clear Eyes, Full Hearts.'"
