If the first couple of episodes of The 100: Season 4 have made one thing clear, it’s don’t mess with Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropoulos)
It’s been quite a journey for the character, who’s had one of the most incredible and notable transformations on a show known for big character transformations. In Season 4, Octavia has been more deadly than ever, now functioning as an assassin, while becoming more closed off than ever in the wake of losing her beloved Lincoln in Season 3 and deciding to eliminate his killer, Pike, moments after the two had been fighting together against a common enemy. I recently spoke to Avgeropoulos about Octavia’s current state of mind, her bond with her mentor, Indra, and more on what to expect as Season 4 progresses.
IGN: Based on how Season 3 ended, I thought Octavia was going to take off completely on her own. Instead, she hasn’t physically left Polis, but she’s certainly making it clear she’s not to be trifled with.
Marie Avgeropoulos: Octavia is really hardened by the death of Lincoln. She’s really on the path of “Anybody that comes close to me and hurts me -- or anybody that I love or loves me -- bleeds.” She’s emotionally unavailable this season and is on a really dark and dangerous path. Which has been why I think she is the most enjoyable to play this season because she’s so incredibly unpredictable.
IGN: You’ve had some very bad ass scenes, including the one coming out of the body bag in the season premiere.
Avgeropoulos: Yeah, the body bag scene was one of my favorite kills from Octavia because it was so stealthy and smooth. But my knees were killing me for weeks afterwards from doing that slide a million times on concrete.
IGN: If it’s any consolation, it looked cool! With Lincoln gone and Bellamy not physically around, is Indra her most important connection and relationship right now?
Avgeropoulos: Indra has always believed in Octavia even when Bellamy doesn’t and even when Octavia doesn’t believe in herself. Indra has accepted her as her un-biological daughter, almost. It’s really the only time you see Octavia vulnerable is with Indra, which is why I enjoy the relationship between them to. You get to see a softer side of Octavia and it really shows the audience how insecure underneath it all she really is. But when she’s around everyone else she has her walls back up and is really emotionally unavailable.
IGN: In the meantime, she is working to keep Roan in place as king and not disrupt things too much in Polis.
Avgeropoulos: The dangerous path that she’s on and all the killing that she’s doing to mend the hole in her heart, because of Lincoln’s death, has been really extreme. But when Octavia killed the trishanakru leader because Roan was threatened, she had to do that because Roan was injured. If she didn’t, they would have come after the King. She’s using her skill set and the dark path that she’s been on in a way that benefits her people as well. She’d doing both. Sometimes she takes it a little far.
IGN: As you mentioned, she took out Rafel last week with a well placed stab to the ear. Of course, he’s not the only one seeking vengeance there. We have Ilian in play. Is Octavia keeping an eye on him, knowing that he might still be trouble?
Avgeropoulos: Octavia and Ilian have a really interesting relationship this season. The audience will be surprised how that evolves because she’s not letting anyone near her emotionally this season. She doesn’t want to connect with anybody and I don’t know what else to say about that. I don’t want to give anything away. But Octavia and Ilian come together in a really unpredictable way.
IGN: I have to ask about the tattoos we’ve seen Octavia rocking recently. We never saw her get those onscreen. Did you get any backstory?
Avgeropoulos: They’ve been there for a long time. The thinking behind that is that was the tattoo that Lincoln gave her. It takes hours to put on and she’s usually wearing a jacket. It’s a kind of in your face thing but it shows the audience how far she’s really evolved – characteristically, she’s evolved and changed so much, but physically as well.
IGN: Octavia didn’t return to Arkadia so she’s not part of the group actively trying to figure out what to do about the situation with the power plans. But is it safe to say that she’s going to have to confront that one way or another down the line?
Avgeropoulos: I think the last place on earth Octavia would ever be is back with the Sky People. So Octavia comes up with plan B and it’s really interesting how that will affect people and the uproar and chaos that exists because the world is coming to an end.
IGN: Will we get to see her and Bellamy more and what their dynamic is like in the wake of everything that went down with Pike?
Avgeropoulos: Octavia still holds Bellamy responsible for the death of Lincoln. And you see them come together toward the end of this season. He sticks up for her in an interesting way during a battle. Episode 409 has been my favorite to shoot in the history of The 100. It’s Octavia driven and she takes part in a big battle. And you see something interesting happen between Bellamy and Octavia and you get that Blake moment that everyone wants to see.
IGN: We’ve talked before about the fascinating evolution of this character. On last week’s episode they had the appearance of the blue butterfly which is such a callback to a very different time in the show and a very different Octavia. Is it amazing for you to think back on her then vs. now?
Avgeropoulos: Absolutely. Because that’s when the idea was, “Oh, we’re going to find happiness on Earth!” It brings back memories of a happier time that she thinks is never going to be possible for her. It’s amazing to see how far she has come as a character and that’s what’s made her so much fun for me, as an actress, to play. She’s always changing. You never put her into gear. She’s always changing gears. And I think that’s what the audience likes about her too is her unpredictability.
IGN: And the different ways she’s going to assassinate someone next.
Avgeropoulos: Exactly, yeah! I’ve had so much fun playing "Skairippa", assassin Octavia because I love to sword fight and it’s really fun to do.
The 100 airs Wednesday nights on the CW at 9:00pm ET/PT.
