The 100: "The Four Horsemen" Review

Octavia's gonna fight, and she's gonna win!

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

A busy episode this week with a lot going on in both Polis and Arkadia.

Indra has a daughter! While it feels like you can guess where this will likely go (some sort of showdown between her biological daughter, Gaia, and her spiritual one, Octavia), it’s a fun curveball to introduce for Indra, suddenly giving us more insight into who she is.

While the Flame being stolen from Roan off-camera felt odd (hey, Roan, get better security, maybe?), I love that he’s quickly realized just how valuable Octavia is – and her new "Skairippa" name is awesome, complete with its “Death From Above” translation.

Perhaps Octavia can join the Mobile Infantry next?

Perhaps Octavia can join the Mobile Infantry next?

While not resulting in the same thing (no Octavia popping out of a body bag!) it felt too soon after the Ontari/body bag scene in the premiere for another big fake out/ruse of the sort pulled with the Flame apparently being destroyed. More interesting was afterward, when Octavia liked to Roan that the Flame was destroyed and instead let Gaia keep it. We know little about Gaia beyond who her mother is, so we’ll find out if this was the smart play, but it certainly won’t go over well with Roan if/when he finds out.

I loved seeing Raven in super intense leader mode in Arkadia, telling Clarke it was time to get her list ready of who will be saved -- “Choosing who gets to live or die is your specialty” was a cold, but great, line. And I have to say, I was firmly on Raven’s side. Keeping your eyes open for other possibilities doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also be preparing for a worst case scenario that seems unavoidable, especially with very little time to prepare. Stop slacking, and make your "Who Won't Die" list, Clarke!

By the end, after Jaha’s hail mary doomsday bunker plan was a bust, Clarke was indeed writing her list, and the big question this raises is who exactly did she include on it besides Bellamy. Her mom and Raven I think are givens. But who else? Do Jasper and Monty make the cut? One would assume Murphy is a no? Should be interesting to dive deeper into who’s on there in the weeks to come.

The revelation that Luna, as a Nightblood, is immune to the radiation poisoning is a cool new twist. Of course, as far as we know, Luna is the only Nightblood left… or is she? Luna had such a long build up that it was clear her couple of episodes last season wouldn’t be the extent of her role in the story, so now having her in the midst of everyone else in Arkadia -- and instantly turning out to be oh-so crucial – is a more than efficient way to show she is indeed vitally important.

There was also some great moments here for Murphy, who continues to follow a fascinating path, given where he began. Having him and Emori discuss his time as Ontari’s captive was a well-needed bit of uncomfortable interaction that had been skipped over up until now. Murphy then going on to help Abby steal the medicine to try and save that dying girl – even though it failed to work – was a poignant move from a character I never thought I’d use the word “poignant” with when The 100 began.

Bullet points!

-One of the visible names on Clarke’s list is Kim Ginsburg, an amusing nod to The 100 writers Kim Shumway (whose last name already was given to a The 100 character) and Aaron Ginsburg.

-I’d love to think this episode was named after the popular wrestling stable, even though it wasn’t. Still, it makes me happy to know that so many of The 100 cast are wrestling fans and would appreciate the nod, as exhibited here, here and here.

-Nice to have Raven mention Niylah’s help. Hopefully that means we’ll be seeing her again soon.

-The rare glimpse we get into The 100’s past (yet still our future) are always appreciated, including the video of Bill Cadogan speaking to his doomsday cult. And the #Fourhorsemen hashtag was a great touch.

The Verdict

We’re getting into some classic “This is the worst decision anyone’s ever had to make” moral quandary viciousness on The 100 with this storyline where only 100 can be saved. Even Clarke deciding to put Bellamy on the list – against his initial wishes – and then adding herself at his insistence is one of those, “But is this the right thing to do?” moments, which I always appreciate the show for delving into. Meanwhile, Luna’s return and her being immune to the radiation is another intriguing expansion into the world’s lore.
