After escaping Lord Drakkon, Tommy and Billy get a history lesson on their new enemy from Saba.

Lord Drakkon is Tommy from an alternate dimension. Originally, Tommy immediately joined the Power Rangers team after being defeated, but in this alternate timeline Tommy decided to run back to Rita. It’s not explained why Tommy made a different decision at this pivotal moment, and according to series writer Kyle Higgins, that’s on purpose.

“I’m holding onto that reveal for a bit down the line,” he told IGN in an interview. “Also, keep in mind, it’s never one thing. Decisions can be complicated, and there is more to this world being different than just ‘Tommy chose Rita’ at one particular moment.”

With Tommy at her side, Rita’s forces conquer the globe, leading to a final battle with the Power Rangers, who are now joined by different Rangers from beyond the Mighty Morphin era. With things looking dire, Zordon decides to upgrade Jason with the power of the White Ranger.

Evil Tommy breaks into the Command Center before the red-to-white conversion process can complete and battles Jason. When Tommy gains the upper hand, he grabs Jason and says he wants the White Ranger power.

On the next page, Tommy stands victorious having merged the White Ranger power with his own.

“I like dark mirror stories,” Higgins explained of his decision to make Lord Drakkon a Green/White Ranger hybrid. “Cautionary tales and ‘what could have been’ adventures. If done right, they force characters to confront things about themselves in really interesting ways. This first year has been our ‘Green Ranger: Year One’ story, and as such, I felt like culminating with a villain who is literally what could have happened to Tommy is compelling. Especially considering where we’re going to be taking Drakkon as a villain in the future.”

Shockingly, Tommy is holding Jason’s helmet, implying that he killed him during their fight. While it’s not explicit that Jason is indeed dead, Higgins all but confirms that’s what happened off-panel.

“In order to amass the kind of power that Drakkon wants, he had to go through the Rangers. And, it just so happened, that the greatest power of them all was about to be transferred to Jason. So, Drakkon did what he had to do take it for himself,” Higgins said.

So while we now know the general story of how this alternate version of Tommy became Lord Drakkon, we still don’t know precisely why he decided to stay with Rita.

There’s also the question of what happened to the other Rangers. Partially answering that question, we get a peek at the resistance forces opposing Lord Drakkon at the end of the issue when Trini, Aisha and Bulk make a surprise appearance.
