Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch will not come with Virtual Console games at launch.
Confirmed in the press release for next week's indie game broadcast, Nintendo said: "Virtual Console games will not be available on Nintendo Switch at launch. We will share more information in the future."
Virtual Console is Nintendo's emulation service, allowing new consoles to play games from as far back as the NES. It will likely become a major part of the console's new paid-for online subscription, which will offer NES and SNES games each month.
Multiple sources have reported that the Switch will be able to emulate up to GameCube-era games. Those same sources also reported that three GC games were being prepped for launch - it's not clear if those reports were incorrect, or if those games have been delayed for marketing reasons.
The delay in Virtual Console support likely means we'll also be waiting longer for Nintendo's plans on whether discounts will be offered on games previously bought for other platforms.
The press release also reveals that the Switch will require a launch day update in order to access the eShop, but that it "downloads in the background, is designed to install quickly and doesn't disrupt gameplay."
Nintendo Switch will be released on March 3, but we have a full unboxing of the console and its accessories for you right now.
