The LEGO Batman Movie held strong in first place at the box office this weekend, outpacing the debuts of The Great Wall and Fist Fight with an estimated $34.2 million.
As noted by Variety, Warner Bros. animated feature, which enjoyed the biggest opening of 2017 so far when it debuted last weekend, is on track to make $44 million by the end of President's Day weekend, nearly matching the combined Friday-Monday estimates of Fifty Shades Darker and The Great Wall.
Fifty Shades Darker and The Great Wall placed second and third at the box office this weekend, earning $21 million and $18.1 million, respectively. By the end of the four-day holiday weekend, Fifty Shades Darker is expected to make $24 million, while The Great Wall is expected to make $21 million. While The Great Wall's debut is above expectations, Legendary has a long way to go before it makes back the film's $150 million production budget.
In addition to The Great Wall, this weekend brought with it the debut of Fist Fight, which placed fifth with $12 million, just behind John Wick: Chapter Two, which earned $18.1 million. The four-day projections for John Wick: Chapter Two and Fist Fight are $19.5 million and $14 million, respectively.
Just barely cracking the top 10 was Fox's horror film A Cure for Wellness, which earned an estimated $4.2 million. For the full President's Day weekend, however, the movie is expected to slip to 11th place with a four-day total of $4.9 million.
