James Gunn Was Denied an R-Rated Hitman Movie

"The producers at the time didn’t want to make it R rated, so they passed."

Before he became known as the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy, filmmaker James Gunn pitched an R-rated Hitman movie that went nowhere.

Over on Twitter, Gunn answered a question about whether there's any particular video game that could successfully adapt to the silver screen. That's when he opened up about his failed Hitman proposal.

Funnily enough, the two films from the video game franchise — Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant and Hitman: Agent 47 starring Rupert Friend — are rated R. So it's intriguing that Gunn got pushback on that aspect.

Instead, Gunn wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy. And he's also behind the Marvel movie's sequel, recently saying Vol. 2 will defy all your expectations.

As for the game franchise, Hitman received a physical edition release last month. IO Interactive also plans on prolonging the game with additional seasons.
