Halo Wars 2: No Competitive Multiplayer Ranking at Launch

Doesn't have it yet, but will.

The recently-launched Halo Wars 2 does not yet feature a competitive multiplayer ranking system.

As per Eurogamer, developer 343 Industries and Creative Assembly made the decision to withhold competitive ranking so the teams could fine-tune the game’s balance post-launch.

While matchmaking is indeed based on player skill, individual skill is not explicitly shown at this point in time. Instead, Halo Wars 2 only displays the user’s Spartan Rank – an XP progression system.

Speaking to Eurogamer, David Nicholson, executive producer at Creative Assembly, offered the following explanation:

"We decided not to do it at launch because we want to make sure the balance is there," says Nicholson. "We think we've got the game well-balanced, with the two betas we had. But we continually make those balance changes. Our plan is to bring it out, but just not at launch."

In short, it’s coming, just not quite yet.

In our review-in-progress of Microsoft’s RTS space opera, we said we “admire Microsoft’s attempt to expand its prized Halo series into something that spans beyond an endless procession of first-person shooters, and with Halo Wars 2 (and Halo Wars before it) we get to experience this sci-fi universe from the overhead perspective of a real-time strategy game, which emphasizes the scope of its battles.”
