2D Zelda on Switch 'Definitely a Possibility'

Series producer Eiji Aonuma talks about the franchise's future.

With Nintendo Switch serving as a hybrid system, some might wonder what might happen with the handheld 2D Zelda team.

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma addressed this issue while talking with Game Informer. "The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don’t necessarily want to combine them and have them think together, but rather have each think about what they can bring to Nintendo Switch from their own perspective," he said.

So does that mean the developers behind The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds are working on a Nintendo Switch game? "Yes, there is definitely a possibility," Aonuma said.

Now this isn't the first time Nintendo has talked about another Zelda game for Switch after Breath of the Wild. Earlier this year, Aonuma explained how he would like to explore more of the hybrid console's features with another entry in the storied series.

Additionally, at E3 2016, Aonuma even mentioned the 2D Zelda Tri-Force Heroes as a possible stepping stone. He said a multiplayer Zelda could come after Breath of the Wild at the time.

Speaking of Zelda's future, Nintendo announced today that Breath of the Wild will get an expansion pass. It's a first for a mainline entry in the franchise.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes out March 3 on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
