John Wick Could Get a Prequel TV Show

John Wick could be headed to television with a prequel TV series, according to director Chad Stahelski.

Speaking to /Film at a press event for John Wick: Chapter Two, Stahelski explained that while they wanted to tell a prequel story with the upcoming sequel movie, "it just didn’t fit quite where we're at." Instead, it sounds like Lionsgate is interested in telling that story on television.

Stahelski said he and screenwriter Derek Kolstad "basically almost have a prequel written," though they'd rather "save that for other aspects of the property." He went on to note that "Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show, which they find "very appealing" because of the additional creative freedom that medium provides. "I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film," he explained.

As for right now, the director said they are focused on concluding the story they have created thus far and will "maybe save all [their] prequel ideas and impossible task ideas" for television.

John Wick: Chapter Two releases on February 10. Series star Keanu Reeves said that "if the first one was a black belt," then Chapter Two is a "third degree black belt." For our thoughts on the first film, read IGN's John Wick review.

Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World Review

A faithful Wii U port with some extra padding for the 3DS.

When I reviewed Yoshi’s Woolly World on Wii U on June 22, 2015, I gave it a 7.4, which is the mark of a good game. Here’s what I said then:

There’s a handful of really great levels in Yoshi’s Woolly World, which makes the most of its setting and choice of character. The world is exactly what I expected, thematically and in terms of structure: sand, snow, clouds, and fire, punctuated by bosses holed-up in themed fortresses. It’s incredibly familiar, but the imaginative and attractive art style makes it feel fresh and appealing. Outside of those great few levels, Woolly World is a more forgettable and fragmented experience. Cool mechanics are cooked up, but they’re dropped into levels which never realise their full potential and fixate more on unearthing frustrating collectibles.

Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World for 3DS contains all of the same content as the original but also a few significant additions that make it more than just a straight-up port. The most obvious addition is Poochy, Yoshi’s devoted canine companion, who is adorable and handy to have around but almost criminally underused.

The entire 10-12 hour game can be played either in its original form or with Poochy in tow, but bringing him along shifts the challenge down into ‘Mellow Mode’. This downturn in difficulty comes partly from Yoshi sprouting wings – making dying from a fall or missing a jump almost impossible – and a wider range of tweaks introduced by Poochy, who in the story mode actually appears as three tiny dogs that follow Yoshi wherever he goes. It’s a mode likely aimed at children and extremely casual players, which makes it a disappointment for anybody who was hoping Poochy’s addition would refresh the campaign and make it feel worth playing through a second time.

The balls of yarn Yoshi creates by swallowing enemies and uses as projectiles are replaced by Poochies, which can be lobbed through levels in exactly the same way. While the original was never big on resource management, it was always advisable to carry a constant supply of yarn balls to nab every out-of-reach collectible and deal with every enemy.

Poochy also helps with one of the more frustrating aspects of the original. There’s an insane amount of things to collect in Wooly World, including gems, yarn balls, and daisies. While I usually enjoy collectibles that encourage exploration and reward accordingly, in the original some were just plain invisible until Yoshi accidentally bumped into them. Some of this frustration is alleviated by Poochy, who has a good nose for such trinkets. You’ll often see one of the puppies tear off, tugging at a piece of fabric or yapping skyward, because he’s uncovered a stash. As hint systems go, it’s probably one of the best and cutest I’ve ever used.  It feels like a good solution to a problem that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.

Furthermore, Poochy will even take care of nastier enemies entirely by himself. While running through one level, Poochy steamed ahead and lassoed a large piranha plant entirely without instruction – precocious little chap. That’s fine, and contributes to the less demanding experience covered by the ‘Mellow Mode’ description, but as someone who’s played this game before it’s a shame that Poochy’s main gameplay contribution comes within this much less demanding difficulty mode.

Outside of the campaign, there are Poochy-centric stages where the bouncy mutt runs (automatically) through a short level. It’s the only opportunity you get to directly control him, but outside of a high score to smash and a couple of simple side-objectives (which also involve collecting stuff, unsurprisingly) there’s disappointingly little to do with this charismatic new character. There are also 31 adorable and well-made stop-frame animation shorts that unlock every day for 31 days, and Poochy is given a wonderful sense of personality unsurprisingly not afforded by his appearance as a doting projectile in the campaign.

Overall this is an excellent port, with most of the gameplay feeling intact, but the charming arts-and-crafts aesthetic of the original sadly suffers in the transition to 3DS. The richly textured environments of the Wii U version have become much smoother, plainer, and less characterful on Nintendo’s handheld. Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World ends up looking not very different to a lot of the other platforming worlds you can find on the 3DS.

The Verdict

Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World remains one of the cutest games around. Even though most of the tactile charm of the Wii U original has been lost to the 3DS’s technical limitations, there’s still plenty of fun to be uncovered in this colourful and often inventive platformer. Incidentally, it also brings some of the happiest, catchiest music ever to the 3DS.

Yoshi’s faithful Poochy is loveable new addition, but he feels underused; he appears only in a handful of animated shorts, a sparse challenge mode, and as little more than a series of assists in the super-easy ‘Mellow’ mode. He definitely makes tracking down all of the numerous collectibles more enjoyable, but it’s a shame this instantly likeable character doesn’t have more to do that’s unique to his skills.

FIFA 18 Will Feature The Journey Season 2

Complete with new storylines and characters.

The story mode introduced in FIFA 17, The Journey, will make a return in FIFA 18 with a second season, Electronic Arts has confirmed.

During its Q3 2017 earnings call (transcribed by Seeking Alpha), EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced that "FIFA 18 will build on the foundation we created with story mode this year, bringing players back to The Journey with Season 2, featuring new characters and new storylines."

FIFA fans were introduced to The Journey when FIFA 17 released last September. Read IGN's FIFA 17 review for our thoughts on the series' new story-driven campaign.

Wilson then went on to say that their studio is Vancouver is working to create "deeply innovative new experiences" with this year's release, and specifically mentioned Ultimate Team. According to the EA exec, the studio is striving to make this "the most emotionally immersive and connected FIFA" the publisher has ever released.

In addition to FIFA 18, Electronic Arts announced that a version of its popular sports franchise is also headed to Nintendo Switch "later this year." Details on the title will be revealed at a later date, but according to EA's Patrick Soderlund the game will provide an "experience custom built for Nintendo Switch."

Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 Director Will Helm Dune Reboot

Denis Villeneuve has officially signed on to direct the reboot of Dune.

Announced by the son of Dune author Frank Herbert, the Prisoners and Sicario director has teamed with Legendary to helm the project:

It's official -- Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project.

Villeneuve has been in talks to direct the film since last year, but this announcement makes it official. He will presumably begin work on the project following his involvement in another high-profile reboot, Blade Runner 2049.

The Canadian director is building quite a sci-fi pedigree, having scored Best Picture and Best Director Oscar nominations for last year's Arrival.

Dune has repeatedly been adapted and, almost as frequently, failed to have been adapted to film. Alongside David Lynch's cult 1984 film and a Syfy miniseries, both avant-garde artist Alejandro Jodorowsky and Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg have had Dune projects collapse.

EA Doesn't See Titanfall 2's Sales as an Underperformance

The titan that won't fall.

EA sees Titanfall 2 as a success in spite of its lower-than-expected sales.

Speaking during a call to investors, EA CEO Andrew Wilson restated the company’s dedication to the franchise and the people still playing.

“We’re not seeing it as underperformance at this juncture,” says Wilson, via VG24/7. “What we have demonstrated as an organisation is that with great games, we can sell them for many months and often many years.”

Wilson goes on to compare Titanfall 2 with that of fellow EA shooter Battlefield 4; another title which continued to sell years after its initial launch, and all the way up to the release of Battlefield 1.

“So, the way we think about Titanfall is that we have what is one of the best games of this year, and certainly one of the best games in this generation of consoles. And we’ve got a development team who have unbelievable pedigree and a commitment to continue to support the community, and we expect to continue to grow that community through the coming fiscal year.”

According to GameStop CEO Paul Raines, the month of October, 2016 wasn’t the best for new releases, despite a strong line-up including Battlefield 1, Gears of War 4, and Titanfall 2.

"Our expectation was that the new titles released in October would provide a catalyst for new software sales, but despite gaining market share, the titles underperformed our forecasted sales," said Raines.

EA reaffirming its commitment to the Titanfall series is sure to come as good news to current players. Currently, it’s not clear whether the series will prove successful enough to spawn a third iteration.

Speaking in November, 2016, Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella threw the series’ future into doubt, saying "We don't know yet," when asked about the prospect of a Titanfall 3. That said, if it’s up to Zampella, the team would “definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe.”
