Microsoft Makes Good on Xbox One as Dev Kit Promise

"Cortana: Make a game."

During its Build developer's conference today, Microsoft announced any retail Xbox One will be a development kit beginning this summer.

The functionality will come as part of Microsoft's Windows anniversary update, celebrating one year of Windows 10. A preview version rolls out today.

Windows and Devices Executive Vice President Terry Myerson said the summer update brings "all of your Windows applications into your living room," in addition to turning the Xbox One into a dev kit.

Cortana, the Windows 10 personal assistant, is also coming to Xbox One. The moves are centered around the anniversary update, but all fall under Microsoft's universal Windows platform initiative.

The UWP ties all Windows hardware together, including phones, Xbox One, and the upcoming augmented reality HoloLens headset.

The update will be free when it rolls out, meaning anyone with a retail Xbox One can presumably begin developing their own games.

Last week's Xbox One update added new features to the console, including the ability for gamers to purchase backwards-compatible Xbox 360 games directly through the Xbox store on the Xbox One.

The ability to unlock retail Xbox One consoles as dev kits is something Microsoft has been promising since the console launched in 2013.
