Jagex is set to unleash a new challenger to Hearthstone and they’re looking to shake things up with Chronicle: RuneScape Legends.  From the studio best known as the creator of pop-culture legend RuneScape, comes an action-packed card game that actually sees you fight your own cards in a quest for supremacy over your rival. This isn’t Hearthstone; this isn’t Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh or even Pokémon. This is Chronicle, and almost every predictable mechanic in card games has been thrown out the window in favor of Chronicle’s unique twist on the genre.

Jagex will launch the Open Beta at www.rschronicle.com, and there are a few things you should know so you can hit the ground running.

1.

Chronicle gives players the chance to write the fate of Legends from the world of RuneScape.  As each quest chapter opens, a rich environment is revealed and offers up four slots for card placement, each representing a step forward and action point in the adventure. In the role of a chosen Legend, you select up to four cards from your deck, which can be a mix of Support and Enemy cards each with an action and specific values, to lay in the slots on the landscape and lock in sequence.

In a game where the only things carried from chapter to chapter are your stats, temptation to focus solely on your Legend to gain gold and gear can be strong. On the other hand, you can unleash a deadly hails of arrows, summon storms or aid your rival’s monsters to cause their early demise.

As the sequence of cards turn – one-by-one – the quest unfolds, with each card bringing a new challenge or reward. The rival Legend’s chain of cards will play out in parallel with yours, and the path of the rival Legend can help, or more likely, hinder your Legend. At the end of each card sequence, you’ll do battle against each other with the victor being the last one standing.

2.

Chronicle is a game of grand strategy and may even be the most skill-orientated CCG to date; playing on luck of the draw turn-to-turn won’t help. Remember, doing nothing may sometimes be the best option of all – throwing feints and reserving your cards for later Chapters can lure your rival into wasting their precious counter-plays early on. Use this wisely, and hit your enemy when their defenses are down.

3.

Many combos in the game actually rely on hand size, too – especially when playing Ariane, the Mage. Biding your time and building your hand size is in itself a tactic, with some of the most effective decks revolving around using this to deal devastating amounts of damage in the mid-late game.

4.

Sourcing strategies from other players is a vital part of any strategy card gaming, and there is no “secret paladin” autopilot win button for ranking up in Chronicle. It’s more a case of “imitate and innovate” in order to hit your full potential. If a deck doesn’t fit your judgement and play style, it won’t work. Don’t rely entirely on others for surging up the ranks. In fact, if it’s glory you’re after, innovating on pre-existing popular decks and actually optimizing them against the latest developments is a great way to get your name known in the Deck Building scene.

5.

If you’re aiming to hit as high as you can on the leaderboard, the Casual queue provides a vital resource for testing out decks. While the competition you face there might not be as fierce as the ranked queue, you’ll still be able to test out the optimization of your deck when it comes to gold gain, base attack or other core mechanics.

Hitting the ramp in the right way for your deck is a vital part of it performing well. Figuring out the best mulligans and draws for each deck will allow you to head into ranked a lot more confident than going in blind.

For an extra challenge, try experimenting in Chronicle’s unique Dungeoneering mode, which is a draft mode based around progressing down a Dungeon. This mode brings one of a kind rewards, and if conquered successfully, will actually accelerate your collection nicely. It also does not include the traditional deck limits.

6.

Those among the first “Elite” in Chronicle earn the chance to carve their name into the game’s community and the whole competitive gaming scene, and this is much easier if you’re in at the start. For those of you seeking competitive glory, or those simply seeking something new, this is the perfect time to jump into Chronicle’s Open Beta over at www.rschronicle.com.

See you in the Hall of Legends.
