Suicide Squad 2: Will Smith's Schedule Delays Filming

Will Smith is in demand.

Any fans of last year's DC villain-centric Suicide Squad hoping to see their favourite misfits back on the big screen sooner rather than later may be in for a disappointment, thanks to Will Smith's (Deadshot) busy upcoming schedule.

That's according to Justin Kroll, film reporter for Variety, who reports on Twitter that Smith's commitment to the upcoming Aladdin remake and Ang Lee's clone assassin drama Gemini (also known as Gemini Man) mean that filming will not be taking place any time soon.

Earlier this year, Will Smith was announced as playing the Genie in Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin alongside the rest of the cast; filming for the Disney remake has already begun and is scheduled to run until January 2018. Following that, Smith moves on to Ang Lee's long-gestating Gemini (or Gemini Man) - a movie which was first written in 1997.

Originally considered unfilmable due to the complicated premise - which features an ageing assassin facing off against his own younger, stronger clone - technology appears to have finally caught up to requirements and Paramount has pencilled in the movie for an October 2019 release. From Kroll's tweet, it would appear that filming for the movie will take place shortly after Smith finishes work on Aladdin and film through 2018, leaving a possible start date for Suicide Squad 2 late in the year.

Smith's return in Suicide Squad 2 has never been officially confirmed but is considered almost a certainty; judging by this it seems that Warner Bros. are happy to wait for his schedule to clear up rather than writing him out in an attempt to fast-track the movie.

It's been a busy couple of months for fans of the DCEU; along with the announcement that Joss Whedon will receive a screenplay credit for his Justice League reshoots and a Joker & Harley spin-off movie is in the works, there's been speculation over Jared Leto's involvement in the Harley-centric Gotham City Sirens and everyone got confused over whether The Batman will take place in the DCEU (spoiler alert: it will).

One thing is for certain: DC's next big-screen effort, Justice League, hits theatres November 17, 2017.

PS4: Crystal Dualshock 4 Coming This October

Fans of see-through merchandise, rejoice.

Following a limited edition release last year, PlayStation has announced in a blog post that translucent "Crystal" versions of its updated DualShock 4 controllers will be releasing this October.

Translucency aside, these controllers are essentially identical to the current iteration of DualShocks; these are the latest modification to Sony's controllers which feature a redesigned touch pad on which a second light bar is located to provide players with in-game cues.

In addition to the classic Crystal version, Sony has also announced Red and Blue varieties, which are identically translucent but feature a splash of colour.

There are some regional restrictions, however; UK players aren't getting the red or blue options and will have to settle for the classic Crystal controller, whilst players in Russia aren't getting any translucent controllers at all.

Sony's range of Crystal controllers launch Tuesday, October 17.

Netflix already has an impressive lineup of original animated series thanks to shows like Voltron: Legendary Defender and Trollhunters, but they're not stopping there. This fall Netflix will add to that lineup and introduce a new take on iconic action figure Stretch Armstrong. Dubbed Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters, this new series will re-imagine Stretch as a teenager and a member of a team of super-powered heroes.

We recently had the chance to chat with executive producer Vic Cook about this new series and how Flex Fighters will update an old favorite. During our talk, Cook also reflected on his time working for critically acclaimed animated show like Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Scroll down to find out what he had to say.

IGN: Let’s start with the basics. How did you come to be involved with this Stretch Armstrong revival?

Vic Cook: The co-producer and co-writer of the My Little Pony Movie, Michael Vogel, was a studio creative executive at the time when Hasbro decided to develop Stretch into an animated series. He called me about coming over as executive producer and supervising director for the project. We had previously worked together on The Spectacular Spider-Man and after discussing [it] with him, I became very enthusiastic about the creative possibilities to re-imagine Stretch! I was hooked! Soon, almost [at] the same time, writers Kevin Burke and Chris “Doc” Wyatt were brought in and we got to work. It was an opportunity to create a new superhero universe.

IGN: Is this a property you have an attachment to from your childhood?

VC: I have nostalgic memories of Stretch Armstrong. Pulling him apart and seeing the ooze spill out!

IGN: The franchise bounced around several movie studios in the '90s and '00s but never quite found the traction it needed. Why do you think things finally changed with the shift from live-action film to animated television?

VC: Although everyone remembers the toy, the show is a reimagining. Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters features a brand new superhero universe with new main characters, a new setting and supporting cast. We are creating new lore, new back story to move forward with. We are exploring how these type of superpowers can be reinterpreted and used in new ways. A TV series gives the viewer more time to get to know the main characters, the supporting cast and a new rogues gallery of super villains.

IGN: A lot of the scripts for those aborted Stretch Armstrong movies took a sort of figurative approach to the Stretch Armstrong name and conceived him as someone being pulled among the many responsibilities in his life. Is that an element you plan on including in this series?

VC: Jake is very much the over-scheduled teenager of today. A lot is expected of him, and he is preparing for his future.

IGN: Can you talk about the decision to re-imagine Stretch Armstrong as a teenage hero with an entire team backing him up?

VC: Making them young gives us the opportunity to see them inexperienced not only with their powers, but in life itself. We felt it would be more fun and interesting to see Jake/Stretch experience being a superhero with his friends Nathan Park/Wingspan and Ricardo Perez/Omni-Mass. We wanted to have three distinct personalities, each reacting to situations from their different points of view to allow story opportunities for humor, drama, and fun banter.

IGN: Do you feel that makes the character more palatable for an all-ages audience?

VC: I think you can have heroes of any age be appealing to an all ages audience. For us, the choice in making Stretch a teen and with a team was for the story and character possibilities we wanted to explore.

IGN: How would you describe the Flex Fighters and their role in the world? Are they Spider-Man-esque heroes trying to do good wherever they can, or do they have a more specific purpose ahead of them as they come to terms with their powers?

VC: We have a fun and intriguing take on our three characters’ superhero journey. I wish I could answer that more specifically at this time, but that can’t be revealed yet. However, we’ll be giving fans a first glimpse of footage at HasCon [the official Hasbro convention] on Sunday, September 10. And the whole first season will be up on Netflix Fall 2017.

IGN: Netflix has been setting a pretty high-standard for action/adventure-oriented animated series lately with projects like Trollhunters and Voltron: Legendary Defender. Do you feel an added pressure to live up to that standard?

VC: Those are amazing shows. YES!

IGN: Are you drawing inspiration from those shows in any way?

VC: We were well into production when those came out. We have our own mythology and aesthetic. Along with Netflix, we at Hasbro are very excited to introduce our new superhero universe.

IGN: Are you taking more an episodic or a serialized approach to storytelling in this first season?

VC: It’s both. Each episode is self contained, and has its own beginning and end, but there is also a progression per episode of an overall story that spans the season. There will be character development of main and supporting characters as well as intriguing back stories as the overall story arc continues. Keep an eye out for Easter eggs. You may discover something planted in an early episode that pays off later. I am excited for the viewers to watch some really cool action choreography. The heroes and villains have very specific powers and the storyboard artists, directors and I had a great time showcasing their abilities.

Destiny 2: First Raid Arrives a Week After Release

Level up, raid on.

Bungie has announced the first raid for Destiny 2 will be coming the week after its September 6 release date.

This news comes via Eurogamer, who also say that the Trials will launch a couple of days after that on September 15. All of the game's Nightfall activities will be available on release day.

Bungie is keeping the details of the first raid under wraps, however we do know its name and the list of trophies to be unlocked while playing.

A "soft beta" of the new Guided Games system will become available on September 12 in Nightfall. It allows clan members who need extra players to team up with solo players who would otherwise be unable to join in Nightfall and Raid content designed for groups.

It won't be available straight away from launch because there needs to be time for clans to form, and if there are too many of these "Seekers," queue times will be too long. About 30-50 percent of players will be given Seeker access during the soft beta, and the full system will launch on September 26.

True Detective Season 3 Greenlit; Director Announced

Details are unfolding for the show's third season.

Back in July, we reported that crime anthology series True Detective had locked down Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage) to star in an in-development third series, following the second season's conclusion back in 2015. Now, HBO have given the third season the official green light, and in the process have released more details about what to expect.

According to Deadline, Ali's character has been named as Wayne Hays, a "state police detective from Northwestern Arkansas" who is drawn into the mystery of a "macabre crime deep in the Ozarks". It's also been confirmed that the season will feature three different time periods, across which the story will unfold.

Along with the announcement, Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin) has been confirmed as a director for the season, along with series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who in addition to making his directorial debut for the show will continue in his role as showrunner, executive producer and sole writer for the series - with the exception of episode four, which is co-written by David Milch (Deadwood, NYPD Blue).

It's been two years since the last season of True Detective closed, but there's a good reason for the studio taking their time over the third season. Back in 2016, HBO President Michael Lombardo took the blame for a divided response for season 2, which saw a big dip in the ratings between the first and second season finales. Lombardo said that he became "too much of a network executive" and ended up rushing the show to air. With a little more time to breathe, we'll see how this new season fares.

There's no further details as of yet, but if previous seasons are anything to go by we can expect an eight-part story this time round. We'll provide an update as and when air dates are announced.
