We Talk Walking Dead's New Season and... That's So Raven's Return!

Plus, Knight Rider's coming back (again) and The Rock is looking back at his wrestling career via a FOX comedy.

We're back to talk about the grisly, brutal events on That's So Raven and the wacky, psychic hijinks on The Walking Dead! Wait... did we mix those up again?

This week's episode does actually end with a long, spoiler-packed conversation about the first two episodes of The Walking Dead's seventh season and why Matt didn't like the premiere (and why Eric didn't either!) and what we felt about the tonal whiplash of meeting Ezekiel in the next episode. Catwoman: Election Night #1 - $4.99

The US Presidential election is nearly upon us, and DC Comics is getting in on the political fun/terror with this special Election Night issue. While Catwoman has top billing, this is actually a double comic with stories about two different characters, as alluded to on the cover art.

The first is a story by writer Meredith Finch and artist Shane Davis about Catwoman learning about the Penguin’s political ambitions in Gotham City and her relationship to the common people of the city.

The second is a 10-page story featuring the return of Prez, a short-lived but critically acclaimed DC You title about a teenage president. We’ve already given it a read and it does what Prez always does best, which is creating a biting parody of big political issues.

Green Lanterns #10 - $2.99

By writer Sam Humphries & artist Eduardo Pansica | DC Comics

The latest arc of Green Lanterns has introduced the Phantom Ring, a mysterious new ring that -- as you can guess from the cover -- has access to the entire emotional color spectrum. It’s fitting for GLC members Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz to encounter this ring because they are atypical Green Lanterns who express more doubt and fear than people like Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner, so they have a lot to explore with this mysterious mood ring. They’re new to the job, after all, which makes their stories more relatable and easier for new readers to get into, to boot.

But just because they’re new recruits doesn’t mean writer Sam Humphries is going easy on them. An old-school, uber-powerful villain showed up at the end of last issue, and he’s joined up a new baddie who is off his rocker and wants the Phantom Ring more than anything. Sounds like a great challenge for the rookies as they get in touch with their emotional side.

Superman #10 - $2.99

By writers Patrick Gleason, Pete Tomasi & artist Patrick Gleason | DC Comics

Superman is by far one of DC’s biggest Rebirth wins. We’ve already read this issue and can say that Patrick Gleason and Pete Tomasi continue their hot streak with a big clash of father/son duos as Superboy gets kidnapped by Robin, forcing Batman and Superman to step in and try to sort their boys out. It’s tense, dramatic, and, at times, downright hilarious. You’d think a book about Superman raising his son Jon would be more on the cheesy side, yet it’s been nothing but a fun, emotional ride that cuts to the core of family relationships and boys being boys.

Mayday #1 - $3.99

By writer Alex de Campi & artist Tony Parker | Image Comics

This five-part mini-series kicks off a new spy thriller from Alex de Campi, who knows a thing or two about action spy-thrillers. Set in 1971 during the Cold War, Rose and Felix are two Russian agents who must travel to California to deal with a defector, but then they’re played against one another so that only one will make it back home alive. To us it sounds like The Americans meets James Bond, a slice of America with a side of spy action.

From De Campi we always expect something unconventional and challenging but also endlessly entertaining. And with Tony Parker of “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” fame on art, it’s hard to come up with a decent reason not to put this on your pull list.

Pokemon Company Interested in More Remakes

The success of the Pokemon Virtual Console re-releases isn’t changing the company’s approach to remakes like Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Pokemon series producer Junichi Masuda says the Pokemon Company is interested in more remakes of older Pokemon games.

“I think the remakes, like Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, is still an approach we’re interested in,” Masuda told IGN. “With the Virtual Console releases of the original games, specifically there had never been a way to bring those Pokemon over to the latest generation. It had always been that you couldn’t get those Pokemon out.”

Masuda explained that services like Pokemon Bank and the Poke Transporter finally gave the developers an option to release the original versions on Virtual Console, essentially letting people upload first generation into the new game.

The Pokemon Company started releasing remakes as part of the third generation of Pokemon, with Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen for the Game Boy Advance released in 2004. Pokemon remakes established how the developers would use Nintendo’s newer handhelds to showcase improved graphics and introduce features not included in the original games.

Earlier this year, The Pokemon Company released Virtual Console versions of the original Pokemon games with updated battle and trading features on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. It’s important to note that the Virtual Console versions are essentially the original game with a few updated features. The Virtual Console Pokemon games quickly went on to become the best-selling retro games on the Nintendo 3DS digital storefront. We asked Masuda if the success of these digital Pokemon re-releases would entice the developer to release Pokemon Gold and Silver on the eShop.

Masuda said there were no plans at the moment to re-distribute Pokemon Gold and Silver games on Virtual Console. “With the 20th anniversary, it was the right timing to release the original games,’ Masuda explained. “I think that we really want to give people the experience of bringing these Pokemon from the original Game Boy and seeing what they look like in Pokemon Sun and Moon. That is something that I want people to enjoy.” The company released a full scale remake of Pokemon's second generation, called Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, in 2010.

We asked Masuda if he could detail how the Pokemon Bank will import the first generation Pokemon into the new games, specifically because some stats in the newer games didn’t exist in the original versions. “I wonder how they’re going to change,” he teased, “I hope that’s something people will look forward to seeing how it works.”

Avatar Sequels: Cameron Wants Glasses-Free 3D

"We'll get there."

James Cameron wants to raise the bar for filmmaking with his upcoming saga of Avatar sequel films, and hopes to release them with glasses-free 3D and higher frame rates.

When accepting an honorary membership in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the director expressed a desire to innovate in the name of storytelling, THR reports. "I'm going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates," he said.

Cameron went on to say he is "still very bullish on 3D." After acknowledging the fact that they still have some work to do before it's entirely feasible—citing the need for brighter projection—he said he believes it's possible: "Ultimately I think it can happen—with no glasses. We'll get there."

Cameron further discussed his desire for advancements in high frame rates, calling it "a tool, not a format." According to the director, movements during 3D panning can create "bothersome" artifacts, which can be removed by increasing the frame rate.

As far as the applicability of high frame rates (HFR) to filmmaking in general, Cameron said "there may be some films that benefit from it, but I feel you still have to have a little bit of that veil of unreality that comes with 24 frames per second." As such, HFR isn't something Cameron believes should be applied to all films, with the director adding, "I think you do it where you need it."

Earlier this year, Cameron announced plans to release a total of four Avatar sequels, with the first hitting theaters in 2018.

Alien: Covenant Star Reveals a Big Twist

"I am allowed to say I am ..."

Alien: Covenant star Michael Fassbender recently discussed a big twist in the Prometheus sequel regarding his role as the synthetic David.

Warning: Minor spoilers are below.

“I am allowed to say I am playing two robots: Walter and David," Fassbender told The Irish Times (via AvPGalaxy). "I think what’s great about it is that [director] Ridley [Scott] has gone back to the original DNA of Alien, the horror element of that.

"But is also has the scope and the scale of Prometheus. Ridley has cut it already. He is a machine. He is an incredible human being, and he was in such good form. He is such an imaginative and mischievous figure.”

AvPGalaxy adds that Walter and David have a contentious relationship. Apparently Walter, the more advanced synthetic, isn't a big fan of the older model David.

Last week, Fassbender opened up about the new name for Xenomorphs in Alien: Covenant. They will reportedly be called Xeomorphs.

Alien: Covenant is targeting a "pretty hard R" rating and will hit silver screens August 4.
