Down in a Hole.
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Runways' penultimate Season 1 episode nicely brought us up to the doorstep of the first official (and potentially violent) showdown between the teens and Pride - with all the kids flaring up their respective powers (except for any dinosaurs that may have been left in cars, naturally) in front of a bewildered squad of parents. All part of Jonah's crisis management plan too, apparently.
"Doomsday" did everything except answer the final final question about Jonah's true identity and his real intentions regarding the supposedly catastrophic dig. Pride found out the kids knew their dark secret, the teens discovered that all of Los Angeles was in danger of being leveled by earthquakes, we learned how Molly got her powers (though not what the energy rocks are), and (for us) the killer of Molly's parents was revealed. It wasn't a huge surprise though, since it basically shifted the blame from one of Pride's cold callous moms to the other - from Tina to Leslie.
We also learned that Jonah had been sick, and healed, prior to his most recent bout (though we're not sure how often he withers) and that he's been fooling all of Pride, for two decades, into thinking they were going to unearth some form of renewable energy. This, overall, really helps out a couple like the Yorks, who seem perpetually on the fence, and their motivations. The reveal also tied them more into the tragedy of Molly's parents and helped provide a better answer as to why they'd want the Yorks to raise her in their absence.
There were a few frustrating stalling tactics, like Nico not being able to look at the charged-up phone because Robert decided to sit on Amy's bed and sip coffee, though nothing along the lines of us having to wait a few episodes for Alex's laptop to decrypt the Wizard intel (that wound up leading nowhere). Thankfully, "Doomsday" circled us back to the group mostly as they were at the beginning of the season - all gung ho about thwarting their parents - with a few added romantic wrinkles. Sure, it felt a little strange for Chase to come back around to being anti-Pride so quickly, after demolishing the evidence last week, but the newly galvanized group made for a good second-to-last adventure.
It was also really cool that the newly minted hook-ups (from Chase and Gert's full flung fling to Karolina and Nico's sweet kiss) didn't sour the group. Sure, Gert's defenses kicked in and she tried to reject Chase afterwards (probably expecting him to reject her first), but he still mostly shook it off in the name of trying to stop the end of the world. And even still, they'll probably be able to get along just fine if they do wind up settling on it being a one-time thing.
This was the first time the teens all came together, in "enhanced abilities mode," since they rescued Alex back in "Kingdom," the seasonal halfway mark, and it was great to see most of them use their gifts and/or inventions. They even made a stab at giving themselves a team name, though they were right to shoot down the tributary "Runaways." It just doesn't make sense until they choose to go on the run - if, in fact, they do. I don't know where the story is going to drop us off, exactly, after the season ends next week, or whether or not it'll dive into that much-anticipated comic book moment (do not google and possibly spoil yourself), but given the world of spoilers these days it might be unwise to let something like that linger past Season 1.
The Verdict
Runways ramped up the intrigue as it nicely set up next week's season finale with a united teen/team front and some fun new romantic entanglements.
