Robert Kirkman to Produce Film Adaptation of Birthright

The movie adaptation you've been waiting for

Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead and Outcast comics, will be producing a film adaptation of Image Comics' Birthright.

Kirkman's production company, Skybound Entertainment, announced its next partnership with Universal to bring Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan's comic to life.

Birthright tells the story of a family whose son goes missing for a year, only to return as a burly full-grown man, claiming to have been trapped in a fantasy world where the passage of time flows differently to Earth's.

Think Flight of the Navigator but with less of the wisecracking robot and a much more mysterious — and slightly more sinister — air. The screenplay will be penned by Despicable Me writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

“Birthright is a giant fantasy epic but at its core it’s a story about family, and I’m really excited that a creative team who values those same storytelling elements will be adapting Birthright," Williamson said.

"Andrei and I have put so much of ourselves into developing the Birthright comic and we know that Cinco, Ken, and the entire Skybound team will do the same as they adapt it for the big screen. I’ve been a big fan of Universal ever since I was a kid, and I’ll lose it when I see the Universal logo in front of the Birthright movie.”

There's no word on a release date yet, what with the project only just being announced, but that gives you plenty of time to catch up with the comics.

Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment has already partnered with Universal Pictures to adapt both Robert Kirkman's Invincible series, as well as the Skybound/Image comic Kill the Minotaur.
