Longtime Spider-Man Writer Departs, Takes On Iron Man

Dan Slott is Spider-Man writer no more.

Marvel writer Dan Slott will be leaving The Amazing Spider-Man after writing the character for 10 years. The next superhero he will tackle is Iron Man.

Slott began writing Amazing Spider-Man in 2008 with the “Brand New Day” story arc along with a team of writers and went on to take over the title solo with the occasional co-writer. Some of the highlights of his run include Spider-Island, Spider-Verse, and Superior Spider-Man.

With Slott’s last issue, which will be June’s The Amazing Spider-Man #801, he will have written 189 issues of Spider-Man. It’s an impressive feat, although Brian Michael Bendis still holds the record for writing the most issues of Spider-Man. In an interview with Vulture where this news was revealed, Slott said his departure has been planned ever since 2014’s Spider-Verse, although at the time he didn’t know Bendis was leaving for DC Comics. He said had he known, he would have stayed on in order to break Bendis’ record, but even though he’s leaving Spidey behind for now, he could still write the character again later down the line to allow him to break the record.

Slott didn’t offer many details on what to expect from his Iron Man run, but he did reflect on how now Tony Stark is a household name right along with Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent.

“Everyone in the world knows who this character is, and everyone in the world knows who Tony Stark is. This is Tony Stark, Iron Man. This gonna be about technology in the Marvel universe in a very specific way and it’s gonna lead to very big things,” Slott told Vulture.

Slott explained how he views Tony Stark and what sets him apart from other heroes.

“More than any character in the Marvel universe, he is the self-made man. You take him out of that suit? He’s a normal man. He makes himself the superhero. He makes himself into the thing he wants,” Slott said. “There will be a very unique cast in this book of characters: Iron Man characters you love and Marvel characters that you haven’t seen folded into the Iron Man cast. So, at the end of the day, there’s Captain America with super-soldier serum, and there’s a god of thunder, there’s all these characters around him with these amazing abilities. But his abilities came from his own two hands. He made it, and he stands amongst the gods because of what he can imagine and what he can make. That’s exciting.”
