Dragon Ball Super Episode 121 Review

And then there were two.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Things are looking bleak for Universe 3, but they have one more trick up their sleeve: the mighty Anilaza. While this powerful foe didn’t offer much on his own for the story, Episode 121 still delivered a fun, dramatic episode and featured a great team-up between all our heroes, something that had been sorely missing from the Tournament of Power.

The Tournament of Power has had interesting combatants for the most part. In fact, some of the antagonists like Jiren have been built up to such a great degree that Super would be remiss to not bring them back for future stories. However, Anilaza, the giant fused robot from Universe 3, is anything but interesting. Virtually no background story is given to the character as a whole or its individual robotic components and instead just exists as a giant, powerful threat to force our heroes into working together. The end result might be an interesting fight, but it lacks any depth or significance.

Seeing everyone work together to defeat Anilaza was quite the spectacle, though, and reminded me of the older days of Dragon Ball when our heroes had to work together and not solely rely on Goku. The brawl as a whole was great, but the beam battle at the end was the ultimate highlight with its excellent colors and lively music. Finishing it off with Android 17 was another nice touch, as it again pushes against the norm of Goku having to do everything.

It was a quick scene, but the moment where Android 18 was knocked from the arena made for a nice culmination of events for the androids. Before this arc, I would have never believed Android 18 would sacrifice herself for 17, but Super did an excellent job of rekindling their bonds through small, often subtle moments and made her sacrifice impactful.

It’s been a long time coming, but Frieza seems to be taking a more active role. Up until now, his character has barely been utilized outside of a few select episodes. It’s a shame because his plotting and scheming could have made for some great moments, similar to how he very briefly schemed with Frost. While Goku and the others have great combative potential, Frieza could offer the most interesting story development in the Tournament of Power as his character plays both sides of the field in an attempt to further his own causes.

The Verdict

Universe 7 rekindles the importance of teamwork in a solid episode. Anilaza wasn’t a terribly interesting enemy but served as a powerful threat that brought our heroes together for a great brawl. Frieza finally makes his return in typical Frieza fashion, while the Androids have a brief but powerful scene that is the culmination of weeks of subtle build-up.
