Star Wars: Why the Rey Piece Is Still Missing From Monopoly

U.S. retailers still working through previous inventory.

Toy and board game-maker Hasbro has come forward to address why Star Wars: Monopoly still doesn't include a Rey player piece.

Despite Hasbro's announcement back in January 2016 that a new version of the game that includes a Rey piece would be available before year's end, consumers still haven't been able to find this revised version in stores. When asked about the situation by The Associated Press, spokeswoman Julie Duffy said via email that the Rey piece has been made but the sets that include the piece are not yet available for purchase in the United States.

"In early 2016, Hasbro updated the 2015 Star Wars: Monopoly game to add a Rey token," Duffy said. "This product was sold to retailers in several markets around the world but is not available for sale in the U.S. due to insufficient interest." The company revealed the Rey piece at the 2016 Toy Fair in New York City.

According to Duffy, Hasbro offered stores the new version, but retailers in the United States have opted against selling the revised board game because they already have enough inventory. While she said the version that includes Rey was available in several markets, including France and the United Kingdom, the AP reports that a family from the U.K. that recently purchased the game didn't get the version that includes Rey.

Those who have already purchased the game and want the Rey piece can request one by contacting customer service.

The game pieces included in the original version are of four male characters, which include Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren and Finn. Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams has made his disappointment with the lack Rey in the film's merchandise known in the past, and may have even had a role in her addition to the board game.

Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens in theaters on December 25, 2017.
