Batman Director Matt Reeves Isn't Using Script by Ben Affleck, Geoff Johns

War for the Planet of the Apes director "starting again" on a "new story."

Director Matt Reeves has revealed he’s not working with the previous script for The Batman, opting instead for a new story. Reeves explained the shift on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Batman News).

When asked if he was going to be using the script originally put together by Ben Affleck and DC’s Geoff Johns, Reeves replied, “No, it’s a new story. It’s just starting again. I’m excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool.”

Reeves went on to qualify that, despite signing on to helm The Batman after Ben Affleck stepped down from directing duties, he’s been otherwise focused purely on his work on War for the Planet of the Apes and there’s nothing further to report on The Batman at this stage.

“Truly, I have not been doing anything but working on Planet of the Apes,” said Reeves. “We are just starting [on The Batman] so there’s really nothing to say about anything.”

Reeves was confirmed as the director for The Batman back in February. A full script rewrite was tipped as probable shortly after Affleck stepped down.

The original script for The Batman was written by Ben Affleck and DC Comics president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns. It was subsequently rewritten by Justice League writer Chris Terrio. Terrio previously won an Oscar for his Argo script, and co-wrote Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with David S. Goyer.

Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes opens this week in North America and the UK, and later this month in Australia. We’ll next see Affleck as Batman in Justice League this November.
